Hello Matt,
I have been looking at NZ myself and have discovered that they recently changed the rules from the current 2 years to 5 years.

You have to obtain a Permanent Resident Visa and you can do that even if
you have never lived there! Eligibity for Citizenship is after 5 years
in country as a Permanent Resident I believe

The original poster is talking about permanent residence, the change in the rules to which you refer is about *NZ citizenship*. And it's gone from 3 years to 5 years, not two.
Permanent residence can often be obtained from offshore, before departing for New Zealand.

Eligibility for Citizenship changed in April 2005. As a result, you may need to have lived legally in New Zealand for five years (formerly three years) before applying for citizenship, depending on when you were granted residence. If you are or have been married to a New Zealand citizen you may only need to have lived there legally for two years.

Double check the latter. IIRC with the changes, a spouse now needs
5 years of residency before he/she can obtain citizenship.

I did check before I posted and the website states that if you are or have been married to a New Zealand citizen you may only need to have lived there legally for two years and this is quoted under the new requirements so can only presume that it is therefore correct - this is the link to the NZIS website for info regarding citizenship should any of you wish to check it out for yourselves...http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migra...comingACitizen
Edit:- thanks for the link Jeremy - Cath, I apologise, after having a look at the link that Jeremy posted it would appear that the information on the NZIS website is incorrect - would you credit it!!! This is an extract from the site that Jeremy posted the link to..
Citizenship Questions
What are the key citizenship provisions in the Citizenship Amendment Act?
The Act:
increases the standard period of residence in New Zealand from three years to five years;
removes the provision for special treatment for the spouses of New Zealand citizens so that applicants for the grant of citizenship who are married to New Zealand citizens will be required to meet the five-year residency period;

Permanent Residence on or after 21 April 2005
If you applied for and received permanent residence after 21 April 2005 you are required to fulfill the following requirements. You are required to have:
1. Been present in New Zealand for a total of at least 1,350 days during the 5 years immediately before you make your application; and
2. Been present in New Zealand for a total of at least 240 days in each of those 5 years, with a Permanent Resident Permit issued by the New Zealand Immigration Service; and
3. Fully met any conditions imposed by the New Zealand Immigration Service in regard to your Permanent Resident Permit.
Please Note: If you can show that there are exceptional circumstances that warrant a reduction, you may be considered as long as you have a minimum presence in New Zealand of 240 days with a Permanent Resident Permit in the 20 months before you make your application.
