Dear Sir,

It means i got ASCO code 2231-79 (Oracle Specialist) and my designation is Database Adminsitrator , as given by yours link http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/[email protected]?opendocument
can i relate myself to the 262111 Database Administrator accordingly to new SOL?

So, exactly who's in? What does Software Developers / Programmers mean?

A search in Seek for Software Engineer or Analyst Programmer gives mostly .Net Developers.

The new SOL is missing following occupations , i think new SOL for IT occupation missing the following occupations are no more in need or some facts missed out by DIAC before issuing new SOL.

261211 Multimedia Specialist
261212 Web developer
261399 Software and Application Not Elsewhere Classified (Software Testers)
262111 Database Administrator
262112 ICT Security
262113 Systems Administrators
263111 Computer Network Professionals
263112 Network Administrator
263113 Network Analyst
2632 ICT Support, QA and Test Engineers

Bummer,262111 Database Administrator isnt in new SOL :(

Hi George,

I have 5 years of experience in .Net Technology. Below is the breakdown of my experience.

From 2008-2010

I have been working as a C# developer writing only the C# code for the web applications. I wrote the C# code while the Web development was done by some other guy. We are working in a team of 5 people. Every one has different role.

From 2005-2008

I worked in ASP.net,C#, SQL Server. Because I worked alone I programmed in
all the three technologies(ASP.net,C#, SQL Server).

So do I fulfill the Recent work experience (12 months in the last two years in a skilled occupation). Please advise.

thanks,
Ug

Hi guys, I tend to feel the skills of many of us, such as .Net, Java, data warehousing - anything which involves programming- coding (not administration\support) can be projected as the software engineer\programmer codes which are in the SOL. It entirely depends on how we project our roles to DIAC. I am into datawarehousing, the development part, so I do not see any reason why I should not project myself as a software engineer. This is my opnion -

261112 Systems analyst
261311 Analyst programmer
261312 Developer programmer
261313 Software engineer

All the above seem to look for people who do programming, regardless of the technology...

Hi,

I'm about to receive my ACS letter and a bit in the same situation. I expect to be given the code 2231-79 (Datawarehousing Specialist).

I'm thinking of asking a review to be reassessed as systems analyst. I'm involved in Data Warehousing development projects and my role involves data modelling, architecture design, definition of specifications, supervision of developments and project management.

It's just that I'm specialized in the field of Data Warehousing and Business Intelligence, all my experience is in this speciality only.

Matter of principle with yours case for ACS that what would you show yours JD's in yours reference letter and CV for reassess? For me i have got 2231-79 as Database Administrator using Oracle , if forbid i do not get my category in new SOL as a database administrator then how will i claim new SOL which close to my category i.e System Analyst.

Rub29 May 21st 2010 10:26 am

Re: ASCO 2231-79

I did mention all these job duties but the focus in my CV and reference letters were really on the Data Warehousing speciality (I wanted to get the MODL description for CSL, I didn't know I'd have to apply under new SOL).

However, it is clear from my letters and CV that although I'm specialized in Data Warehousing, my profile is not that of a database administrator but rather technical project manager (I'm also involved in development on the Reporting side as well), with a focus on the duties I mentioned previously.

In fact, the duties mentioned in my letters correspond to several of the duties mentioned for Systems Analyst in the ANZSCO classification.

This is entirely my opinion so don't take it as gospel, but I don't think we'll be screwed, it's just a case of waiting to see where it fits in the new codes. Something that was on the MODL before as a highly regarded specialisation has to fit in somewhere.

This is unfortunate and shows a lack of understanding of .Net specialisation. I am a .Net specialist and have been given a positive assessment by ACS just a few weeks ago. I would not classify myself as a web developer, but I accept that some .net developers would be classified as web developers.

Maybe ACS will understand the difference, but that may be asking too much.

I second to you.

All Java/J2EE/.Net people should project themselves as Analyst Programmer or Software Engineer. If you are involve in Designing stuff and have worked as Team Lead then apply as Software Engineer but if you are working as part of a team and doing just development then apply as Analyst Programmer.

Just my opinion.

I think to class a .NET developer as a Web Developer is short sighted in todays age.

I myself develop for both online and offline applications using .NET. With cloud based computing and data sharing, the line between traditional installed applications and web applications is virtually non-existant. We try and develop our applications to run through a browser so we can deliver cross-platform compatability and this is this future.

I saw somebody post that .NET developer = Web Developer which isn't on the new SOL. I'm hoping that the people at ACS see beyond this and consider the relevance and importance of how applications/software is developed via browsers/internet and .NET developers aren't just 'web developers'

It's a bit of a mess with these new ANZSCO codes.

After having a look on the ANZSCO web site, it's true that I could also go for Software Engineer instead of Systems Analyst. I'm really confused now, things were much simpler when codes were based on specializations rather than roles.

I think its much simpler now. You don't need to worry about the assessment when you have experience in multiple technologies. It is more generic now and you have freedom to build your case as per your roles and responsibilities more easily for assessment rather worrying about putting technology keywords in your resume/cv and experience letters.

Rub29 May 21st 2010 4:45 pm

Re: ASCO 2231-79

The problem is that given the previous SOL, many applicants like me have already built their CVs and experience letters to reflect a particular specialization in order to get a positive assessment from ACS.

Now, with the new SOL, we have to be reassessed again and I wonder how ACS will handle these reviews. If I had known, I would certainly have remained more generic in my letters / CV and not insisted on the Data Warehousing speciality (although in this field, I do have experience with multiple technologies). Will we be required to submit new experience letters etc? I really don't know how our cases will be reviewed by ACS (i mean those who have a positive assessment in ASCO and who want a switch to ANZSCO).

Re: ASCO 2231-79

I'm not trying to speculate on anything, by reassessment I meant a review.

I'm pretty sure a review will be required by ACS because I asked the question to my ACS CO and she said, to quote her exact words:
Applicants who hold, or are about to hold, an assessment outcome letter with an ASCO code issued by the ACS prior to 1 July 2010, will be advised on the assessment outcome review process in due course.

When I asked more details, the answer I got was:
You will be notified in due course. Please keep an eye on the ACS website.

These answers seem pretty logical to me, a direct mapping between ASCO and ANZSCO for IT occupations is simply not possible although some people here persist to believe that a conversion table will allow them to use their existing letters which are in ASCO.

Imagine someone has a positve assessment with ASCO 2231-79 specializing in a particular technology. You can't know by a simple mapping if on new SOL, that person is a programmer, a systems analyst or software designer because the codes are now role-based while they were technology-based before in the case of those 2231-79 codes. I believe that ACS will have to look at cases individually and then grant a new ANZSCO code if they believe that the person is on new SOL.

Concerning the details of the review process, we have to wait for more info from ACS, I just hope we won't be asked to pay again for that.

Alls generic IT category in new SOL but afraid why Database Administrator is not in new SOL?I got +Ve Assesment for the ASCO code 2231-79 (Specialising in Oracle) as a Database Administrator , in new SOL Database Administrator is no longer exist , i think they would not give me any equivalent ANZSCO code for my ASCO code upon reviewing.

For the individuals like you who already have done their assessments, If ACS go for re-assessment/reviews, you are not going to have any trouble to become Software Engineer or Analyst Programmer. What I am trying to say is, a person who is working as .Net/J2EE/Data Warehousing specialist IS ALSO A ANALYST PROGRAMMER/SOFTWARE ENGINEER by default. Without having these roles you cannot be a specialist. Having said that, with the same evidences you have provided to ACS, they can put you in Analyst Programmer/Software Engineer category without any trouble. Assessors in ACS are not non-computing people (like they are in USA with immigration dept). They understand the difference between technology and roles that's why they are running an skill assessment organization. They know What is Computer Science?, What is Software Engineering? and What is Project Management? period.

I believe DIAC has modified the SOL with having ACS suggestions/proposals in their minds.

All above is my own opinion.

Hi all,
This is the LETTER I GOT AS A REPLY FROM ACS WHEN I RAISED THE QUERY "Equaivalent ANZSCO Code for the ASCO code 2231-79 (SAP SPECIALIST)?"

Hope it's of some help:fingerscrossed: - Buvan

Dear applicants,

It is intended that the new SOL would apply to all new GSM applications made from the date of implementation, except where transitional arrangements are likely to be provided for. Subject to the approval of the Governor-General in Council of amendments to the Migration Regulations 1994, it is intended that a new SOL would come into effect from 1 July 2010, along with the transitional provisions.

Subject to the approval of the Governor-General in Council of the proposed legislative amendments, it is intended that a number of transitional arrangements would be introduced to minimise the impact of this change on international students.

Further information is available on the DIAC's website at: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/gener.../whats-new.htm

Up to and including 30 June 2010, assessment outcome letters will be issued in ASCO codes only

From and including 1 July 2010, assessment outcome letters will be issued in ANZSCO codes only

Applicants who hold, or are about to hold, an assessment outcome letter with an ASCO code issued by the ACS prior to 1 July 2010, will be advised on the assessment outcome review process in due course.

For more details about our process, please visit http://www.acs.org.au/index.cfm?acti...killassessment <http://www.acs.org.au/skills>

I have already posted the same 5 days back on this thread. This is a prepared response which ACS is sending to everyone in response to new SOL question emails.

Also this answer is so generic, it is not helpful to anyone.

Re: ASCO 2231-79

When someone posts a similar generic response from another skills assessment organization which states that there will be a mapping table between ASCO and ANZSCO, you find it's useful and relaxing news.

When others post official replies from ACS, then it's speculation for you. Maybe you just want to comfort yourself in an opinion a review process won't be required for ACS when this is clearly the direction in which they seem to be going.

The reason VETASSESS and Engineers Australia can use a mapping table is that if you look at old SOL and new SOl, the designations of the engineering professions for example have remained more or less the same (civil engineer is still civil engineer on new sol, same for mechanical, electronic etc and many other occupations).

But we all know that things are more complex in I.T, and it has been widely discussed before in this tread. So, please don't put stupid comments in this tread when the discussion is taking a direction which is frightening you.

I got below reply from Vetassess:

"VETASSESS will not be issuing Skills Assessments in ANZSCO until the 1st of July, 2010. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) have advised that they will be publishing an ASCO-ANZSCO mapping table which will detail the conversion of occupations from ASCO to ANZSCO. Generally speaking, if an occupation has a direct match from ASCO to ANZSCO and VETASSESS are still the assessing authority for that occupation, applicants will not require a reassessment under the ANZSCO code"

Looks like a mapping between ASCO-ANZCO would be published soon

Rub29 May 23rd 2010 12:56 pm

Re: ASCO 2231-79

I also got the same reply from ACS and I'm also about to receive a skills assessment in ASCO code.

I'm not convinced by any premature news, the difference with you is that I'm prepared for the worst-case scenario and the official mail from ACS, even though generic, clearly suggests there will be some kind of review for people like us. I'm not just hoping like you, that DIAC and ACS will come up with a solution for us where we can use our existing letters in ASCO code for migration after 1st july. What if they don't? As you said yourself, they always come up with surprises.

I assure you I'd be as happy as you if things are made simpler for us, through a mapping table but I argumented why I think it is highly unlikely that things will be that simple. I sincerely hope that future announcements from ACS and DIAC will prove me wrong.

No point in continuing this unnecessary discussion with you now, let's wait for the official news.

@Oliman,

I am with you man, all your post are factual and helpful. And Rab, you should have been more polite to a senior member who has posted some very helpful information. Lets not fight here guys, be prepared for the worst but hope for the best.

Cheers,

TAA

Thank you sufyan_victoria, oz_dreamz09, and foha2012 for the support.

My only intentions for this thread that I have started is to keep in touch with guys who are in confusion with new SOL, and to help others by finding facts and figures which may give us hope and positivity for our future goals to immigrate to australia for a better future.

I have been in this forum for more than a year now and I have observed many people spread false information which they have heard somewhere and they don't try to seek the solidity of that news and rather spread their fears in this forum. This creates un-necessary tension and stress for others. I saw the same thing from Rub29's posts, and I tried to stop him doing that so that it won't create unwanted stress for others. On the other hand, Rub29 took my words personally, and used harsh words which shows his caliber.

Finally, as Rub29 has a thinking that I don't want to be ready for worse outcomes, I have some news for you Rub29. I was the one who was left with 5 points because of MODL removal on 8th feb when I was just 20 minutes late from completing the online application and making the payment.

Afterwards, I tried for state sponsorship and failed in getting one from Victoria and it cost me 2 months. Still I didn't gave up and went for SA sponsorship, and got it on 6th of April. I started online VISA application once again when all the sudden Shafaqat309 called me very nexst day and told me that I have 3 hours left to submit the application as DIAC is closing VISA application with 6 hours prior notice.

I rushed for a survival but couldn't, again I was 15 minutes late on the very last page of payment where my credit card was giving an error.

Rub29, I am pretty sure that you must have realized that how I have faced worst cases and how much ready I am for any worse outcome in coming days.

I really hope that you also learn something from my long post and the experience that I have shared. There is nothing wrong in growing up!

Hi oliman,
I have seen you applied for SA SS. Do you think SA is a right choice for IT guys like us ? Also how about brisbane ?

Please update.

No SA is not a very good choice for IT guys, but the cost of living makes it attractive as it is the most cost effective place to live. Salaries are almost 93% of Sydney and Melbourne in Adelaide, yet cost of living is less than half!

Opportunities for IT guys are less in Adelaide, but personally my vote is still for adelaide as it is one of the places where you make your personal property (estate) in a shorter amount of time.

Hi,

I didn't mean to be rude or anything to you, but you also said that I'm spreading false information here when I've just quoted an official reply from ACS (which clearly implies some of the things I said, even though it's a generic answer and you had already posted it before).

As I said, let's wait for the official announcements now and not continue in a discussion which is useless.
