Got PR for pick up, but have to leave Australia
I got a letter from the Embassy issuing the PR.
They told me that I could go and collect it. Unfortunately I have to leave
Australia,
get the VISA at any embassy after co ordinating with the issuing emabssy and
then re enter with the Family.
A very silly rule.
Does any one has an idea how much time I am allowed to wait until I collect
the PR?
I would prefer in January comnbined with a extended vacation and I dont like
to leave
for an expensive short trip.
On the letter no timeframe is mentioned, except that they would need 3
working days to verify that we left Australia before they could issue the
PR.
Thanks
Klaus

Hi Klaus,
Yes, a very silly rule with its origins in the dark ages; apparently none of
the airlines are complaining, although you do wonder whether this
unnecessary travel is doing that little bit more to increase greenhouse
gases, and perhaps that's the best argument. They clearly don't care about
the cost and inconvenience to you :-(
Your visa validity dates will be governed by your medical and character
clearances, so that you will need to leave and return before they expire.
Case officers will, however, always try to work in with your requirements.
Cheers

Re: Got PR for pick up, but have to leave Australia
Just to add a few things to what George has said:
- You don't get any benefits of PR (Medicare etc) until you come back
to Australia as a resident
- If your circumstances were to change (eg a health scare) between now
and collecting your visa, you might have a problem.
- If you plan to become an Australian citizen, the 2 year waiting time
doesn't begin until you get your PR visa and come back into Australia.
In your shoes, I'd be on the next plane to Auckland
You can always try to reduce the cost of flights by going and
returning at times when (especially) business people don't want to
travel.
