Customs (laptop)
Hi All,
I've got a two year old laptop (Toshiba Tecra 8100 PIII 600 MHZ) and I
wonder if Customs will haggle me with any GST. Since I got it as a
gift in Christmas of 2000 I don't have the receipt for it but it's got
normal wear and tear which I hope gives the Customs enough indication
that the item is older than a year. I intend to carry it with me in
its laptop case along with a bunch of software. Anyone foresee any
problems or would like to share their experience?
TIA,
Armand

You shouldn't have a problem. If I'm right GST is only charged on new products being imported into Australia.
Can't say if any of your software would attract GST ?
If in doubt seek preofessional advice.
Know that Australia has a 220/240 volt system (with different shaped plugs to UK/Ireland/Singapore ... so you might need a plug adaptor or a different mains transformer ...

Re: Customs (laptop)
We had no problems entering Australia with a laptop, and were not questioned
about it. It was clear we had lots of luggage and were moving, and went
straight through customs. Never questioned on many other trips in or out
either- I'm sure you'll be fine

Laptops are pretty standard pieces of hand luggage these days. I know that Singapore Airlines let you have one plus your normal hand luggage as well. My partner bought one especially for the trip - so it was brand new - and no-one ever questioned it.

Okay just out of curiosty what do they class as new ?
becuase I plan to take a PC not laptop with me when I eventually get out there and it will be no where near new.
on top of that is it up to you to prove if the goods are new or not ?

Re: Customs (laptop)
Appreciate your responses Stan, Tommy, darkstone, and Lizzie!!
Although I've had no problems in Heathrow (London) or Logan (Toronto)
I just wasn't sure what to expect in Melbourne since this is going to
be my first entry (on a student visa). I hope it goes as smoothly as
you all described...
Cheers,
Armand

I did get stopped by customs at Auckland airport once, customs officer was most interested in my laptop - asked who owns it, how old, what it was used for etc. I just stated that it's my employers (which was true) & he seemed happy enough with that. Been through AKL airport several times since & never had any problems.

If you are arriving as a student ... presumably you will one day leave (change of plans aside) ... so you are NOT importing the laptop. Shouldn't be a problem.
I'm sure I've seen something somewhere (a sign at an Airport) about students being permitted to bring Laptops into Australia provided they subsequently take them out.

Re: Customs (laptop)
You are absolutely right Stan; as a student I will be exempt as long
as I take the laptop out with me once I finish my studies. Thanks
again!!
