Default Baggage allowance query?

Hi all,
I have booked and paid for one way flights to Melbourne in January.
Austravel ring me today so say that we don't get our "double" baggage
allowance because Singapore Airlines will only give this to those on
"Migrant" visas i.e. going over to Oz to be a citizen. My query is:
what is a "migrant vias" when it's at home, I thought my PR visa was
one and I do intend to stay and become a resident. I checked back on a
search of this ng and found someone who flew Singapore and got their
40 kgs no problem. Am I being given the runaround or have I missed
something here? Please help before I ring SA without my facts!
(NB - 3 children and Christmas coming, need all the kgs I can get!)
Thanks,
Louise

What's your visa subclass?

Is it your first trip to Australia with the visa? (People who've
already validated have problems getting double baggage)?

You may need to escalate it with the airline - speak to a manager, not
the person on the front desk. Although your bargaining position is
weaker having already paid for flights.

Do you need double baggage - with presumably 2 adults plus 3 kids,
that should make 20kg * 5 = 100kg?

Some people end up flying via North America, where higher baggage
allowances are standard.

I found that you only qualify for the double baggage allowance if you book a
single rather than a return and as we could get a better deal on a return,
we opted for that rather than the additional baggage allowance.

We got a bit stuffed with our travel insurance. We took out an annual family
travel insurance policy thinking it would cover both out first trip out to
register and the subsequent trip out for the actual move. We were later
informed that as the return leg or our second journey (coming back to see
the relatives for Xmas probably) is over 3 months after our arrival, we
won't be covered even for the outward leg. Not a happy bunny, I can tell
you. Especially having specifically told them of our intentions before
taking out the policy.

It could be one or more of the children could be an infant, hence no
allowance. We had the same number (2 + 3, one as an infant) and we got 40kg
with Malaysia Airlines, but had to produce visas. We managed 140kg excluding
the hand luggage - which was also over! Also, if you have booked a stopover
this usually invalidates any special allowance (we were going to go via the
US but this ruled it out).

I think you're right there Gordon. We have just booked with Singapore
and there was no problem with the double allowance because we booked
one way tickets.
Jeremy made a good point about whether or not the allowance is needed.
We have two kids, so the double baggage allowance comes to 160 kilos.
That's a lot of weight to manage. Also, if you are shipping stuff as
well, you can put most stuff in the container and keep your personal
baggage to a minimum.
By the way, my wife saved quite about a hundred quid by going directly
to the airline. All the agents quoted higher prices and some also
wanted to charge 1.5% for credit card payments.

Lastly, thank's to whoever posted last week advising that January was
a busy time and so tickets might be scarce. It's true, my wife got the
last tickets left on our flight and there was little else to be had.
Nice one.
