Default Anyone done a statutory declaration for 175?

Hi, I'm just about to lodge my 175 application; the final thing I need to do is get a reference from my current employer. I've been putting this one off as I'd rather not tell my boss until it is completely necessary. An immigration agent on this site told me I could ask him for a reference and tell him it was for a bank loan/mortgage. I'm sure he would buy this but I would also have to provide a statutory declaration as well as a cover letter from another colleague. This is all possible but how do I go about getting a statutory declaration? And do the immigration people actually bother contacting the referee anyway? What would the cover letter need to specify? And will this guarantee my boss is not contacted?
