Default retaining residency

Hi hopefully someone can help me out - if you are a resident of NZ, do you have to stay in NZ for a required number of days/years in order to retain residency? Hubby & I are both British with Canadian permanent resident status.

Looking forward to any replies

Yes you do. Until you qualify for an indefinite returning resident visa (which may not be available in future).

There's information at http://www.immigration.govt.nz

Presumably you are aware that Canada has residence obligations for permanent residents too. If you leave Canada without Canadian citizenship you will not normally be able to return once your residence is gone (usually within 2-3 years).

Thanks for your response - yes we are aware of our PR obligations to Canada & definitely don't want to jeopardise our PR status here. We are just trying to see if we can possibly juggle things in order to retain residency in both countries - I am guessing not!
Canada is absolutely a priority for us so we will maybe have to find another way.
Thanks again for the replies, Louise x

Why not get your Canadian citizenship first, then move to New Zealand?

The only way to have the right to live in both countries is to have dual Canadian and New Zealand citizenship.

The wait for NZ citizenship is now five years.

We don't actually want to live in New Zealand full time. We are going in Sept for a 6 month holiday to catch up with friends etc and wanted to be able to work a bit to pay for our holiday. We were hoping to be able to spend 3 or 4 months a year in NZ, working part time if we needed to.

Once again. If you want to divide your time between Canada and New Zealand indefinitely, with full work rights etc, then you need (in addition to Canadian citizenship/PR):

- New Zealand citizenship; or
- Australian citizenship; or
- an indefinite New Zealand returning resident visa

The problem is that getting NZ citizenship or an indefinite RRV may prejudice your Canadian PR status and/or your plans for Canadian citizenship, because of the amount of time outside Canada required.

One rule when moving countries is do one thing at a time. You will find things simpler if you focus on your Canadian citizenship first, then look to New Zealand if you still want that.
