Vancouver and Calgary - Cost
Does anyone know what are the main differences between cost of living in Vancouver and Calgary.
What is the average rent in East Vancouver for example - for a room in a shared house and what would the equivalent be in Calgary.
With regard to Calgary, how long does the good weather last
Does it start to get warmer in April. When does it get cold again.

Cost of living in Calgary is lower than Vancouver and no, it doesn't get
warmer in April. Winter temperatures in Calgary increase considerably when
the Chinook (warm wind) blows. Temperatures climb well above freezing and
stay there for a week or so and this can happen at any time during winter.
After several weeks with a maximum temp of -25, I remember walking around in
short sleeves in February during a Chinook. Temperatures went down to -20
in April & it snowed on my birthday (May 15). Leaves didn't appear on trees
till June and Spring as such only lasts a week or so. Sometimes it starts
snowing again in October.
If you don't like snow & cold weather don't go to Calgary. If you don't
like rain then don't go to Vancouver! I very much prefer the snow & bright,
crisp weather to the pouring rain...

thanks for the replies
I didnt know winter could last so long in Calgary. So there is 8 months of winter. why do people want to live there if it is so long.
In montreal the winter last 6 months and that is further north.
About the rain - It didnt stop here last summer and it was very dull- I think there was 1 and half weeks of good weather - that is the truth. I dont think Vancouver could be as bad as that or could it.
I would like to live in North Vancouver or downtown but dont know if I can afford it . I will pay 500-600 dollars for a room in a shared apt. Would I be able to find this around keith rd.
Is east vancouver really that bad?

Ok I will avoid - thanks for the advice!
Do you think I could get a room in a shared house or apt in North Vancouver for 500-600 can dollars a month?
If not, where else do you suggest as a place to live. I heard downtown is expensive so anything apart from there and East Vancouver which is reasonably accesible

If you are working downtown, the rent bracket you are quoting puts you in really grotty areas. North Van is really popular because of the skiing, so you may find it hard to get even shared accommodation at that price. Remember you will have bills on top of that, so I would aim to rent a smaller self contained unit and not share. You get ripped off anyway and sharing is a pain in the butt. Why don't you live out a bit on either the Skytrain route (Burnaby out to New West and North Road (Coquitlam) or the West Coast Express route? Port Moody, Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Maple Ridge are all cheaper and on a direct train route into Vancouver. I used to live in Poco, but my needs and wants with a big family may be different to yours. Newspaper to look in is the Vancouver Sun and the Tri-City News. Maple Ridge is the nicest out of those three. Maple Ridge Times is the local paper there. All of these are online, a Google search will give you the web addresses. If you are a young free and single type, then Kitsilano is where you want to be. Expect rents up to $1200 a month for sharing a 2 bed apartment (nice building) down to around $800pmth. Best of luck!
