We actually used Ryder to go from Colorado to Ottawa, returning the truck just back
across the US border in NY for about $400 per 24' truck plus about the same for fuel
... that was about 16,000 lb of stuff and we needed 2 trucks!
Smaller trucks are a bit cheaper.

Hi there,
We shipped our stuff from New York City to Vancouver, BC in December. We had about
1500 pounds worth of stuff. The total final cost was about US$1500. We briefly
thought about U-Hauling it, but found that the cost of renting U-Hauls for an
inter-state or cross border move was quite prohibitive! Plus, we didn't really find
the long drive from the east to the west coast very appealing.
Have fun!

Not sure about the weight, but just to give the reader an idea, in 1999 we U-Hauled a
fully furnished 2-bedroom apartment, including a hitch/trailer for our car, from
Alabama to Toronto for about one USD per mile. It was a one-way trip (droped off
equipment at U-Haul in Toronto) and a very nice bonus was that we got one month's
free storage at the U-Haul facility in Toronto which worked out great, while we
looked for a job, permanent place to stay, etc.

Wow that sounds like a good deal to me Stuart! Was this recent?
When we checked the rates from U-Haul, Ryder and the other company (can't remember
the name but starts with P), we were quoted in the region of at least US$1300. And
that was for a one way rental from NYC to Seattle. (We have family in Seattle who
were willing to help us move the stuff from Seattle to Vancouver.) The quote for NYC
to Vancouver shot up to $1800.
Of course, being the nosey parker I am, I asked how much it would be if the rental
was in the reverse direction, Seattle to NYC, and the price dramatically dropped from
$1300 to $600. Urgh!
In any case, we were pretty happy with our moving company, and our stuff arrived as
scheduled, and in perfect condition. We also had no problems clearing customs.

I just tried the Ryder web site ... $900 for the our run. Maybe I got a deal because
they wanted trucks back east at the time ?
Penske is $640 if you're an AAA member for the same trip!

Just pick a few of the agents for the big van lines and have them give you an
estimate.
