Our 1st. PR application was approved in 1991 and we landed in Toronto in Oct. 1992.
We stayed for a month and applied for SIN card and OHIP. After receipt of the
health and SIN card, we left and never returned and as per the `183-day rule`, we
were deemed to have abandoned Canada. We have no issue as to us having given up our
PR status.

However, recently we made a new application for a Cad. visa and was thankful that our
2nd attempt was successful. We plan to land in April 2002 and my question concern the
old SIN and OHIP cards we obtained in 1992. Can we use the cards already in
possession or do we apply for new ones???

Best regards

I suspect the correct answers are:

Your old SIN (both number and card) is still good. (I'm assuming here that it's a
"permanent" number -- which, since you originally landed in Ontario, would presumably
start with a 4 or a 5.)

Your old OHIP card is probably no good and will have to be replaced. I don't know if
you'll be issued a new number or not. When you go to the provincial Ministry of
Health office to sign up for OHIP again, it would probably be a good idea to bring
your old card, just in case they want to revive your old number. (Don't be shocked if
they ask you to surrender the old OHIP card, just to make sure neither you nor anyone
else can use it fraudulently.)

If your OHIP card is the old style, white with a red centre, it stil may be valid.
Mine was isued in 1992 and I still use it. Best to check with OHIP howver.

Even if the Card is valid, do not attempt to use it. To do so will result in some
real problems. Re-register with OHIP. You will have no coverage for 3 months
after landing.

Your SIN card should be OK to use.

You will have to reapply for OHIP. The application asks if you have ever been issued
an OHIP number before, and if you have, you must list it on the form. Bring your old
OHIP card with you.

You will, in most probability, be issued a new OHIP card, which includes your photo.

Hi Jim,Stuart,Rich & Stephen,

Thanks for yr kind comments.

My SIN card contains 9 digits and starts with number 5** 1** 7**.

Our OHIP card is white with a horizontal bar measuring 20 mm with the word
Health. Sante printed over the bar. The bar is also printed with the logo of
G`ment of Ontario.

Best regards

You still need to re-register with OHIP ... There is a 3 month waiting period from
the time you enter Canada, whenever you register with OHIP. Doctors will charge you
if you don't have your OHIP Card ... having the number is not enough.

Then it's a permanent number, and you should use it.

Even so, you still have to re-register and wait the 3 month period before you can use
it. Bring it with you when you go to the Ministry of Health office. You will probably
be issued a new one.
