Default PR renwal - best time to apply to meet eligibility criteria

Hi, I was wondering - my PR card is due to expire in October this year. And though I don't have any plans to travel at the moment, unless I had to, I was thinking of getting it renewed just in case, and because its the only Canada government-issued ID I have that's quite useful for ID purposes (apart from my health card).
But I seen that the processing times are almost 90 days just now, so was thinking of applying earlier. The only thing is I landed in Sept 5 years ago, and I had to go back home to the UK for a while due to family reasons. But counting from when I landed, I'm 819 days in Canada as of today. But if the time in Canada is counting from the day of application, I think does applying early cut short my number of days in Canada if I apply early, since 5 years ago in June, I hadn't landed yet. And I would like to make sure I have met the criteria for days in Canada, as I had to go back home for a while. So would it be safer to leave the application to nearer September? But then I know my card would expire before I would receive a new one with the long processing times. Just wonder if anyone might be able to advise on this? Thanks in advance .

It's a rolling 5 years from the date of landing - the expiry date is printed on the card...- .

Ah okay, thanks for this Siouxie. So I should be okay to apply now, as it counts my days in Canada starting from 5 years from landing (which was Sept 2016), rather than 5 years ago from date of application which would make it June 2016 (in which case I hadn't landed yet, and so would not be present in Canada). I think I am just a bit confused how the rolling 5 years work, and wanted to make sure if I applied now, I have more than the 720 days present in Canada to meet the eligibility criteria. Maybe I'm making this more confusing for myself than I need to.

Yes, it's 5 years from the date of landing - you weren't a PR until that point.

And then it's 5 years from any 5 year period i.e. if you 'stop the clock' and count backwards, have you spent enough time in Canada. So count backwards from the date you will apply, as long as you have the 730+ days in Canada required over the previous 5 years, you're good to go.

Ah okay, I understand the rolling 5 years now, thanks for explaining this, Christmasoompa . I think I should be good to apply now since I've got over the 730 days counting from landing date in September 5 years ago. Somehow I managed to over-complicate it with getting confused and thought I had to count the days before I became a PR as well (as I hadn't landed 5 years ago today). Thanks
