Default PR/Citizenship eligibility when working abroad on a visa

Hi All,

I need your advice with the following please:

I am a British national. Married my Canadian wife in 2015. We lived together in the UK for a couple of years (she had PR there through spousal visa), before relocating to Canada at the end of 2017 through the PR route (spousal visa). We have been living together in Canada ever since, however, we may have to relocate to the US soon for work purposes on a temporary visa (L-1). This may keep us in the US for three years. How does that affect my Canadian PR/Citizenship eligibility?

Any guidance in this regard would be extremely appreciated!

Thank you all.

It doesn't affect your PR status as long as you're accompanying your Canadian citizen wife, as days spent accompanying her overseas count as days in Canada for PR status purposes.

It will functionally render you ineligible for citizenship for some time, as days in Canada for purposes of becoming eligible to become a citizen must be days spent at least partially in Canada.

Vulcanoid, thank you!

My PR card expires in 2021. When should I apply for am extension..... am I able to apply for an extension if I am situated outside of Canada for work?

You can only renew a PR card from inside Canada (and within 9 months of its validity). If your card expired while outside Canada you'd need to get a PR Travel Document to re-enter Canada.

from within Canada, meaning, I may plan a short trip to physically be in Canada in order to apply, before returning back to the US which is where I may be situated on the L-1 visa?

How do I renew my permanent resident card?

(you will need an address in Canada for the card to be sent to... they won't send them to an address outside of Canada)

You renew the PR card - your PR status remains the same regardless - the card is just proof of your status. You can enter Canada by land in a private vehicle, without the need for a PR card. PR cards are only required for coming by plane, train, bus or boat into Canada... exciting times ahead by the sounds of it!
