Possible Criminal Conviction Issue
Does anyone know if the what we British refer to as a conviction for "Contempt Of Court" would be a reason for PR being denied?

I would suggest you look at Australia. Having a criminal record should be seen as a positive in thier eyes.

Strict rules, the facts of the case is looked at and equated to the Criminal Code of Canada. If it is a dual offense, in that it can be prosecuted summarily or by indictment, the indictable maximum sentence is used as the base comparison.

What about a past bad (student) credit file? Would this affect it?
