police checks and medical
Do you need to get police checks done before the initial application for PR or do you need to wait for a request from CIC. Some countries seem to imply that the form must be one issued by CIC, whereas others---UK--- accept applications from anyone .
Is this the same for the medical in the UK ? Will the doctor have the form and know where to send it ? or will CIC send me the form, with my details already on it, to give to the doctor ?

You generally always have to send police checks with your application, and the medical you wait until it's requested by CIC, but if you're doing a spousal sponsorship case then you must have the medical upfront before sending the application.
And the doctor sends everything to CIC for you, usually electronically.

It depends on the visa route you're applying under, can you be more specific?

I think that the OP is applying via Family Class though, being sponsored by an adult child. But without more info it's hard to give a definite answer!

Sorry, it is a spousal sponsorship.

OK, so you need to have the medical before you send the application then. You can find the instruction guide and a document checklist on the CIC website which tells you exactly what you need to send (including police checks).
As the spouse of a Canadian citizen/PR, you're exempt from the 'excessive demand' criteria, but you must have the medical done first, so get that booked and then you can start filling in all the paperwork.
HTH, good luck.

FYI, there is a FAQ on the outland spousal sponsorship forms linked in my signature, I highly recommend you have that open while you are going through the forms as it will answer a lot of the common questions you are likely to have!

Thanks a lot.
By the way, what is the " excessive demand " criteria ?. Is it some form of extra information required from certain groups ?

Effective December 1, 2014, the updated cost threshold is $6,387 per year. This figure is usually multiplied by five (unless the anticipated length of stay is shorter than five years or there is evidence that significant costs are likely to be incurred beyond that period, in which case the period is no more than 10 consecutive years). This results in the legislated threshold of $31,935.

Thanks again for your help.
The whole procedure is a bit daunting for an old timer.

No country is going to say we don't want you if over say 70 yrs old but they just make the process somewhat restrictive.
