Personally I would chose Canada, even if I wasn't going with my partner.
The reasons for not chosing Oz.

Isolation,
Creepy Crawlies,
Boring Climate (hot and sunny all the time),
Brash people,
Obsession with sport,
High crime rate,

Reasons for chosing Canada,
Low crime,
Distinct seasons, snow in winter, sun/hot in summer,
Liberal relaxed outlook,
Beautiful countryside,
Lots of trees,
Multicultural,
French 'European' influence.

Crazy as it may sound I would hate the weather in Australia. Hot weather is lovely, but not 10 months a year!! Sometimes it's nice to go for walks in the snow or to sit in a nice warm pub looking at the blizzard outside. Australians also seem a bit brash and abrupt.

thats is the most consolidated global differnce I have come across.

I dont think its fair, as there are no such clear-cut generalizations.

Canada economic is very depending to US. While US economics currently
still in downside, I don't think Canada can do better. Slow ecomomic
also makes jobs harder to get.

These days, many American and Europe companies moved their factories
to China, Taiwan, Thailand and Malaysia in Asia region to cut cost and
get cheaper labour. Even Japan make a huge invest in Asia. This event
give advantages to Asian countries to build solid ground to grow their
economics.

Australian economic also growing while it's not as fast as asian
country because Australian economic is not completely depend to US,
but it has more business to the currently blooming Asian economics.

(You don't trust me? See the label of any merchadise sold in
US/Europe, electronics, clothes, computers, etc. How much do you find
them Made in China or Malaysia compared to Made in US/UK?)

It's your call, do you want to bet your life and job to where it has
bigger or smaller chance?

Ravi

I believe US economy will improve, US is and they will re establish soon, as power house for driving world Economy. US is readjusting itself to new (higher) level. That is, US way of moving ahead. they keep on doing it, regularly.

I am not an economist , I am prospective Canada immigrant, currently in India. I started watching certain aspects of US economy since 1982.

In those days US was breaking up Bell telephones to baby bells,
many people were predicting doom and end of communication industry and loss of US control. My assessment: US gained , WHOLE world gained. We all know how communications have surged ahead, after keen competition which started from within US and swept the whole world.

More recently you can look at Microsoft , and all that talk of antitrust. I am sure it will benefit US, by increasing intense local competition.

Advances in computer industry, miniaturization and fast processing >>> US is a torch bearer. Others are following and trying to catchup. Some might have caught up, it might be time up for US. Time to change to a new tune. >>> Well they are changing. Good time for US haters.

Outsourcing lower end jobs to countries like India/ China is nothing but an effort to upgrade local US natives to a new level.
I am sure, US politicians know forward path.

If you see yourself with cutting edge of technology, Canada is a good choice. Canada is neighbor and globally Number 1 business partner of US. Canada gets affected by US actions, But it seems Canada is learning fast not to put all eggs in one basket.

I believe US will be readjusting itself in the world of Nanotechnology, genetics and bioengineering, in the next lap.

In the meantime many countries will keep competing to remain best tailors , toymakers , carmakers or whitegoods suppliers for worlds leading economies , some of them will be doing back office jobs and try to move up or catch up. Race is ON. Rather it was on,
it is upto us to decide, when and which corner of the world suits our part of life, and who is ready to accept us.

Australia ? Nice place , you can go there to enjoy your holidays. Cairns is lovely.

that was my 2 cents!!
Good luck , whatever you decide , never regret.

That's quite a narrow view on things Devim.

There are more European inroads to Canada as far as industry is concerned.
heavy to light automobile industry in Canada is gearing up for higher
production
CDN dollar is still a good buy for European markets, while the US dollar is
still in decline.
The links between the US and Canadian markets is not quite as strong as it
could be due to Americans turning to their own market more and more.

While it is a well known fact that electronics and clothes are cheaper to
produce in Asian markets, this is a reflection on wages.

Even AUS is shipping low paid call centre work to Asia.

In the overall scheme of things there is probably little to choose between
the two countries

Hey Ravi,
I thought u have made up your mind finally...
Ravi if you want to enjoy your life and save money as well... trust me Australia is the place to be...
Canadian winter will crack your bones and though they say its only for 3 months but trust me it is for 9 months
and here(canada) there is no free entertainment
above all when you come here or in Aus.. chances are u have to work in factories or flip burgers.. which is OK ..for a start
but my point is in Canada for the same work which you would do in Aus, here u will be getting $8.00 per hour and in Aus$14.00
So my friend take my word
Go to Oz.

Hi Robert.

What I wrote earlier isn't based on nothing. I want to migrate myself
and I was also confused earlier wether going to Oz or Cad.

But after reading alot of other experiences on both NG,
misc.immigration.canada and misc.immigration.australia+nz I conclude
that landing a job is a bit easier in Oz compared to Cad these days.

I mean here is a decent job based on ones expertise and experiences
not just washing dishes on a restaurant or delivering pizza door to
door. Everyone who wish to migrate should consider this deeply.

So in my opinion, the difficulty of finding jobs in Cad might caused
by the slowing down of the north America economics, both Canada and
US. As you might know already jobs have linear lines to economics
growth.

I hope I don't offend anybody. This is just my thought.

I don't think this is true.
If you watch the growth of industry over the past 50 - 100 years or so, you
will see that as an industry/sector matures, it becomes more and more
concentrated in the hands of a few large corporations.
In its earlier days, every industry is heavily competitive (like "classic
capitalism"), but over a period of time, most of the players either go out
of business or merge to form the larger corporations.

In the case of Microsoft, regardless of the anti-trust moves by the DoJ, if
anything, Microsoft's monopoly is now more firmly established.
They have almost an absolute control over the operating system market and
the office applications market.
They are slowly, but surely, gaining a monopoly in the developer tools
market too.

This has been true for every big industry - take a look at the oil sector,
defense equipment, food processing, etc.
All of them are concentrated in the hands of a few monopolistic
corporations.
In classic economic terms, this is called "monopolistic competition".
It may not always seem to be so because the large corporations have several
"partners", subsidiaries, "sister concerns", etc. which creates an illusion
of competition.

I know this is going off-topic now (nothing to do with Canada vis-a-vis Oz).

If you prefer, we can take this discussion over email.

Best regards.

Well said! Your assessment is right on the money.. The truth is
developed world may be facing some problems in the short term, but in
the long run it is always better over developing world. First it was
the farm jobs, later the manufacturing jobs and now the IT jobs...
However, as you can see the populace is freed up to do the next thing
(which no one sure knows..) But the evidence is there that this sort
of free trade works. For instance, early on 40% of US population was
engaged in producing farm products. Now, it is 3% and US is second
best in producing food in the world. So, the bottom line is some of
this rubs off on its neighbors (canada is already reevaluating some of
its socialistic goals)... Australia will always lag behind the rest
of developed world (say about 15 years) but still is a better choice
than some of the poorest countries on the planet.

This group gives room for peoples thoughts.
Even if we sometimes don't agree. <G>

You didn't offend anyone least of all me.

Been here over 2 1/2 yrs now so think it qualifies me to say a little.
I couldn't comment on how easy it would be for you to find a job in CD or
AUS as I don't know what you do.

In my case and that of friends I know, then it took most of us a couple of
month (avg.) to get that first position and after that things were easy.

We all got back into our respective trades be it insurance, engineering,
etc.

Whichever you have chosen "Preparation" is the key to a successful
transition.

Best of luck.

webcrawler
nice to know your views.

One thing I can add, around 1980's IBM ,CRAY & DEC were big names in computers and supercomputers. People thought they will remain monopolistic. Suddenly two young boys/APPLE made
a paradigm shift. Up goes their monopoly. Microsoft will find its match, it is matter of time. In last decade we saw mega mergers, one can believe it was monopolistic , I believe it is made possible by computers and networking linked with more reliance on artificial Inteligence.

Coming back to US/Canada proximity and Aus. advantage.

US has excellant water resources , sunshine so do Australia.
But you know US has much more than that , including massive infrastructure.
Canada has excellant long term sustainance in terms of hydroelectricity/oil and natural forests. This synergistic combo. is unmatched and god given , no one has it once you couple it with population density.

Australia is very much lacking on Oil front/Chemicals/Refining / petroproducts. They are yet to fully utilize benefits of office automation. Where as US/Canada are front runners in Bio sciences.
Once I think of myself and my kids, odds are more in favor of CANADA, dispite chilling cold.
