Default Obligated to renew an expiring PR card?

Hi,
I just have a quick question... Our PR cards are due to expire soon, a few months before we become elegible to apply for citizenship. We have no plans (in fact we have anti-plans!) to travel during this period of time, and I can really think of quite a few better uses for our money that renewing a card that I don't think I'll use.

Is it OK to apply for citizenship with an expired PR card, or are we somehow obligated to keep them up to date? As far as I understand it, the card is merely a travel document, and if we're in Canada and it expired it only further proves we haven't left during this time. Nobody has asked to see it ever since we got our driver's licence, health card, etc. And even on the health card application it says that the PR card can actually be expired when applying!

So, in short: is it OK to let it elapse, or are we going to get in trouble when applying for citizenship?

Thanks!

There is no obligation to renew the card. It is used for travel and not as proof positive of status.

No obligation to renew it, but it is often recommended to do so in case you need to travel urgently. It maye take 12-18 months for your citizenship to be processed.
