Mr. Miller/Mr Humphries - Please help!!!!! Medical Concern
Can an operation to reattach a detached retina be grounds to
disqualify me under the medical requirement - I underwent an operation
on my left eye nearly seven years ago and other than this lead a
normal healthy life.
I don't have serious visual impairment as a result of the above
incident and am performing my day-to-day functions at work and at home
without difficulty. I also drive my car without inconveniences.
While I fully comprehend the general guidelines in the Act regarding
medical disqualification - I would appreciate your expert guidance or
alternatively your help in providing a source where I can peruse
reading material like the medical practitioners handbook, to help
prepare myself for future eventualities.
Can you prescribe a website where I can find this sort of reference
material as it will help clear doubts in my mind

Medical questions cannot be answered here, sorry. You won't know until your

I do not believe that you would be medically inadmissible based on the
events you describe with respect to a detached retina. In my time as a
visa officer and latteraly as a consultant I have dealt with
completely blind persons including a recent case of severe macular
degeneration. There were no refusals and if you have normal vision and
lead a normal life your operation 7 years ago. According to the
Medical Officers hand book which is the bible for MDs assessing
medical conditions and reports non progressive eye diorders rarely if
ever result in a medical refusal. I am not a doctor but a conusltant
and former visa officer and I can only speak from my expereince and
info provided by CIC. I would not worry about a medical condition in
your case unless you have oother mre serious problems. What you should
be worry about is passing the selection criteria if you are applying
as a skilled worker.
