landing soon
*** post for FREE via your newsreader at post.newsfeed.com ***
Hi all,
We are landing in Canada(Toronto) in ten days time. We are immigrants in the
*family class* from Pakistan. Can anyone guide us about the landing
procedure at the airport. As we are in the family class , i understand that
we do not have to prove any funds requirement. Anyhow we'll be bringing some
funds with us so I wanna know what is the preferred method(travellers
cheques, bank drafts, cash) and in which currency CAD or US$.
Also, does the goods list have to include details like make/model/value or
does it suffice to just generalize stuff? we have no goods to follow list.
TIA
Haseeb

Re: landing soon
a) Cash is king, US or CDN either is fine, but CDN is better since you may
save some money - from Pak currency to US$ to CDN$ - those
commissions/exchange rates can cause some depreciation for sure. Travellers
cheques are second best, a banker's draft will be okay but if it is drawn on
a bank in Pakistan then you may have to wait a while for the funds to clear.
b) Landing procedure -straight forward, just give your visa papers to the
immigration officer - they may ask you to go to a different area, you will
asked some questions to verify the bonafides of your visa approval, then
your landing document will be stamped and you are on your way.
c) A general list is fine, put in serial numbers, date of purchase etc.
only for really high-ticket items (like $300-500+). They won't really
bother with it, especially since you don't have any goods to follow.
d) When you come out, you might as well as make friends with the cabbies
and find out how they became one....

DONT BRING CASH. Bring some, but transfer most of your money in a more
secure form. You lose that bag of cash and you loose your life savings, it's
not worth the risk.
When I landed the immigration guy told us he couldn't believe how many land
with bags full of cash and how mad they were. They walk upto him and open a
case full of the stuff, to which he quickly says "er sir, please put your
money away". It's not 1850 anymore.
