How long once issued is a visa valid for, due to the current downturn it may be more beneficial to us to hang fire before the big move?

Depends on the visa. What kind are you referring to?

Its a PR Visa.

In which case it doesn't have a limited 'validity', it has no end date on it. You need to 'land' within a year of the date of the medicals, and then once you've done that you have to be in Canada for 2 years out of every 5. If you fail to do either of those things then you simply lose your PR status.

Not really, you would have almost 4 years from PR being granted if you wanted to leave it that long - hardly 'straight away'!!

You have to land within a year of medicals, but don't have to stay in Canada - you can return home on the next flight if you want.

Then you just need to make sure you're back in Canada 3 years after landing, so that you comply with the 2 years out of every 5 rule. Although I'd recommend you allow a few extra months as otherwise you wouldn't be able to leave Canada at all, not even crossing the border to the US, without risking losing PR.
