Default How is the IT job market in Ontario and Quebec ?

Hello,

Could you describe the IT job market in the major cities of Ontario and
Quebec: Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal ?

Can IT people still find a job there ?
Is this market completely saturated ?
What type of profiles companies are looking for ?
Experience : 2 years, 5 years, more than 8 years ?
Technology : Windows, linux, Unix mainframes ?
Position: Developper, System Administrator, Support , pre-sales, manager ?

Thank you for your attention,

Harry

Yes ... with lots of perserverence.

    > Is this market completely saturated ?

As in unemployed IT people, yes.

    > What type of profiles companies are looking for ?

Mixed ... but you must have the experience they are looking for ...
close enough is NOT good enough.

Sadly, a lot of companies are looking for "Canadian Experience" ... how
you're supposed to get that is a mystery. Experience does not seem to
be playing a huge role in who gets the few jobs ... Jobs all across the
spectrum can be found.

    > Technology : Windows, linux, Unix mainframes ?

Again mixed.

Sales support positions and lower level management are the really tough
ones to find right now. Any job that doesn't directly impact the
revenue stream has problems.

Don't believe a thing idiot Stuart says. There are virtually no IT jobs
anywhere in Canada. Ofcourse you can get lucky but that is the exception
rather than the rule.

Then I suppose those IT job postings in workopolis and jobboom are
fake then? Or if you visit the canadian web site of major companies
(i.e. Siemens, DuPont, KPMG) The IT job postings they're putting are
also sham? Can't see how these firms stake their reputation posting
lies. There are IT jobs. You just have to be more creative to unearth
them. The demand is not just that great like in '99. Same situation in
the US. It takes a longer time to find a job if you get laid off.

Ignore NorthenLights/Aikido. As usual his idiotic posting is in
response to his frustration in not getting any job.

It's possible. Really it is possible that some of the jobs are fake.
Recruiters just trying to get resumes on their desk.

But as with any job market, there are always jobs. People leave the
industry, people retire, etc. There are jobs to fill. Unfortunately
you have to have years of experience (7+) and exactly the correct
skillset and the correct education.

To sum it up, the IT market is completely saturated and young people
are going into it in droves. Further there are a tonne of babyboomers
retiring over the next 10-15 years. Leaving really great and well
paying jobs. Most do NOT work in IT.

Bull Aikido! There are jobs out there. I know of several companies that are
activly hiring. The problem is there is a glut of unemployed so called IT
professionals. These are the people who jumped on the bandwagon in the late
90s and early 2000s. They had never touched computers before and took fast
track courses to get onboard. I know for a fact that in my class of 25 only
4 of us are working in IT. The rest are people who had no previous computer
experience and some had never even touched a computer before. They are the
ones spamming their resume in a pitiful attempt to get jobs with no
experience or skills.

The stats that are constantly being spewed are inaccurate. If you have the
skills you will find a job.

One can easily tell when there is a surplus of applicants. The job ads
demand you walk on water, in addition to any formal education and
vendor training certifications. Then employer turns around and tells
everyone- "I can't find any qualified applicants" The tricks that some
people's children play....

Hey just because you probably fail at everything you do don't bring your
doom and gloom around here.

If you were actually in the IT industry like I am you would know companies
are doing better and are doing more hiring.

Yes, they are definately doing more hiring. But the number of
applicants isn't going down. It's going up because of the
oversaturation in the IT industry.

True, the glory days of 4 or 5 years ago are gone. The IT industry is just
settling down to become a normal industry. No more handing out stock options
like toilet paper.

A quick search would appear to show that SAP is the predominant one.
KPMG.ca, Accenture, Siemens are all looking for experienced SAP
intergrators, business/content experts. The firms above to name a few
that are searching for applicants are in the Consulting business, I'm
not certain if they are all trying to fill the same client needs. If
you drill-down on the requirement across those companies listed above,
it appears to be similar.
Whitman-Hart, a NY-based consulting firm places JD-Edwards consultants
cross border. check their sites also. PeopleSoft... If you are good
with Brio/SQR might give you an edge as most companies need
custom-specific reporting needs.

This is based on my own research concentrating only on Greater Toronto
Area. Other folks out there might have a different findings.
Aikido/NorthernLights for one can't find an IT job. Not surprising for
one who can't spell 'Silicon' right, after claiming to be an english
teacher.

In my view, these companies are NOT looking for experienced technical
people for these products (SAP, Peoplesoft, JD, etc). They are
looking for people who know the functional side. There are lots of
these jobs but you need a lot of experience.

The programmers and developers for SAP, Peoplesoft, etc... a dime a
dozen in Ontario and Quebec.

I agree with you. employers are making all kinds of demands.
I am in the process of going through interviews for the position of
an Oracle DBA. They said, they received 25 resumes. now I am supposed
to go through 4 different interviews.

how times have changed....
