Hi folks!
I finally received my landing papers and just wanted to share my joy and the
application history which looks as follows:
VISA POST: Berlin Embassy CATEGORY: Independent / Skilled Worker RESIDENCE &
CITIZENSHIP: Germany WORK EXPERIENCE: 15 months (at time of application) EDUCATION:
B.Sc. & M.Sc. in computer science (both obtained in Canada) CURRENT / INTENDED
OCCUPATION: computer programmer (2163.0) INTENDED DESTINATION: Toronto
SELF-ASSESSMENT: 70 Points (excluding suitability points)
DETAILED TIMELINE:
August 2000: Applied for German and RCMP police certificates in preparation of my
application
September 2000: Received German police certificate
23 March 2001: mailed application via registered mail (upon e-mail confirmation that
I could go ahead without applying for newer police certificates at this point).
27 March 2001: Receipt of application by embassy
11 May 2001: received Bank of Montreal money order back from embassy along with
letter saying it was stale-dated (older than 6 months) and that payment should be
resubmitted. Oh well ...
14 May 2001: Paid application fee (once again) via direct bank deposit and mailed
receipt to embassy.
12 June 2001: Received official acknowledgement of application along with receipt for
application fee
15 June 2001: fingerprint sheet with RCMP stamps on back (dated 20 November 2000)
returned to me from Berlin embassy with a hand-written note attached to it saying
that I should submit this directly to RCMP in Ottawa (which is exactly what I did).
02 July 2001: Upon inquiring over the phone about the returned RCMP certificate it
turned out that the embassy had two different files for me, one with the RCMP
certificate and no application and the other with the application and no RCMP
certificate, thereby deadlocking the entire process. Upon explaining the situation I
was told that this missing RCMP certificate was the only thing holding back my
application and that the interview would be most likely waived and I should receive
the medical forms next.
09 July 2001: received letter saying embassy's records indicate they received the
RCMP certificate, but they "cannot locate it", suggesting to reapply for new
certificate.
13 July 2001: received medical forms
18 July 2001: sent RCMP police certificate back to embassy along with a letter
explaining the situation (once again)
24 July 2001: medicals performed, also payed ROLF (without being asked for
it)
06 September 2001: received big white envelope containing
* landing papers (issued on 31 August 2001, valid until 30 July
2002)
* ROLF receipt
* "Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants to Canada" from Stats Canada
* general information regarding landing process
Altogether, it took a bit more than 5 months from date of applicaton until
receipt of landing papers, but it seems the entire process could have
finished sooner if it wasn't for that stale-dated money order and the two
separate files ...
Anyway, I am looking forward to landing in Toronto in April or May 2002.

First of all, Congratulations!
As I have a similar background to yours, except for not being German, I would like to
have your view, if you will, comparing Germany to Canada.
I am a computer software engineer (B.Sc. or as some call it B.Eng.) with more than
five years experience as a software application developer. Recently, received my
interview waiver letter. The reason I am asking you for your view about these two
countries is that I have been working in Germany since Decemeber 2000 and since I
have been looking at Germany as a great country well established, very well organised
and very safe and secure. Therefore, I am not completely sure whether I should land
in Canada or stay in Germany for life.
Could you do me a favor and explain why you have chosen to leave Germany in order to
naturalize in Canada?
I asked this question in the newsgroup in case someone else may benefit from your
reply. Of course, you are welcome to reply directly to my e-mail address above (or
