Regardless of the immigration rules, it is up to the carrier and the agent at the check-in whether they let you board on a one way. If they say 'non' you can argue until the gate closes and you won't get on. Check with the carrier on their terms of carriage, each carrier is different and sometimes an agents interpretation is different. Get the TOC in writing and that should be enough at check-in.

The issue is if someone is refused entry, the carrier is on the hook to bring you home, often having no chance of getting payment.

We came over 3.5 years ago with Canadian affair on a one way ticket. We should them our LMO and explanied we were getting a TWP at POE, they were fine. I think Air Transat staff at UK airports are used to dealing with this situation.

We came on a one way ticket with Canadian affair on 6th sept this year and the only time we were quizzed about it was in the line for check in by airport staff who ask to see your tickets before you get to the baggage check in
