Cross US border for 2 days while on implied status

Situation to date:
- Came on IEC from July 2011 - July 2012.
- July 2012: Changed over to a visitor visa (I have money to stay).
- Flew to England in Christmas 2012, upon returning was told I am looking suspicious having been living in the country for 18 months without working or studying, was encouraged to apply for PR if I wanted to continue living here.
- Applied for another visitor visa extension in January, asking to extend until this Summer, upon which I will have hopefully begun PR application.
Which brings us to today:
I'm expecting the extension of my visitor visa to come through next week, however I've been invited to something in the US for a couple of days before then. What would happen if I went across to the US and arrived back at the Canadian border before receiving the visa extension?
I realize I lose implied status if I leave the country, but as I'm British I am usually allowed into the country as a visitor anyway. I don't necessarily need them to stamp my passport 6 months (although that would be helpful as it would negate the need for the visitor visa extension), but is it possible they would stop me entering back into Canada due to me "being here too long". ?
I realize it's a bit of a complicated situation, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
1. You leave, you lose your implied status. Good chance you could be refused or given a reaaaaaaaaaaaaally short admission. You were warned last time.

Thanks for the reply PMM, how short is 'reaaaaaaaaaaaaally' short?
I should have the visitor extension waiting for when I returned, or a few days after.

Oh haha, I just found my successful visa extension sitting in my mailbox!
I think if I take this with me and show it to border control it significantly increases my chances of being let back in, right?
