Do the Canadian authorities permit an immigrant to import his car into Canada if it
was purchased on loan and the owner therefore does not have the title documents
(which are held by the lending company) but does have the registration certificate
and all other required documents?

Thanks in advance.

Hi:

Immigrants intending to import motor vehicles to Canada should contact the following
office in order to ensure that the motor vehicle complies with Canadian Motor Vehicle
Safety Standards and that the vehicle is eligible for entry to Canada:

Registrar of Imported Vehicles, P.O. Box 217, Pickering, Ontario, Canada L1V 2R4,
Telephone: 1-800-333-0558 (Canada or U.S.), or 1(905) 837-7918.

Yours truly, Ingrid Y. Chen, B.A., LL.B.

The above contact info is out of date. The "Registrar of Imported Vehicles" operation
was given over to Livingston International (a major Canadian customs brokerage firm)
some time ago.

The current contact info for the Registrar of Imported Vehicles is:

405 The West Mall Toronto, Ontario M9C 5K7 1-888-848-8240

Their web site is: http://www.riv.ca
