News Item: 11 face immigration bribery charges
OTTAWA - The RCMP has charged 11 people for allegedly being part of a
scheme to arrange positive decisions on immigration appeal hearings in
exchange for cash.
Among those arrested was Yves Bourbonnais, a 62-year-old former
judicial officer with the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB). He
faces 98 charges including fraud upon the government and breach of
trust by a public officer.
Ten others, all from Quebec, were not employed by the board but also
face numerous charges. There were 278 charges laid in connection with
the investigation.
"The accused individuals are alleged to be part of a very well
structured criminal organization. The offences committed in this
matter strike at the heart of the administration of justice," said
Staff Sergeant Sergio Pasin, of the RCMP's immigration division.
The charges stem from a three-year investigation that began when the
RCMP was contacted by an immigration lawyer.
The lawyer alleged that one of his clients was contacted by someone
claiming to have influence with the IRB and told that in exchange for
a cash payment, a favourable decision could be arranged for his
appeals hearing.
The RCMP said between 50 and 60 victims had been asked for bribes by
members of this alleged organization. The alleged bribes ranged from
$8,000 to $15,000 per person, the RCMP said.
The charges come two days after Immigration Minister Judy Sgro pledged
"sweeping changes" to the hiring practices at the IRB by eliminating
patronage appointments.
Sgro said the board members, who decide thousands of refugee claims
each year, will only be chosen based on merit.
MY TAKE: LIKE I SAID BEFORE, WE HAVE A NEW PRIME MINISTER AND HE WANTS
TO MAKE SERIOUS CHANGES IN THE IMMIGRATION PROCESS AND WHO SHOULD BE
ALLOWED TO GET IN !!! BEWARE SAVAGES AND OTHER NON-CHRISTIAN
IMMIGRANTS

Am sure this has been going on for years, the sooner the Govt stops putting the cronies and relatives in these positions, the better.
There was a story the other day too, about a guy that earns 50k a year working in intelligence, but owns a million dollar home on millionaire row in Ottawa, and a home in the Turks and Caicos where he is now hiding.
Its funny how all these corruptions charges are all just coming out now.

So you think that "None is too many"!
That's been heard before.

Racist claptrap. (As it happens, political correctness dictates that only
the source countries of asylees and other immigrants are allowed to be
racist and exclusionary. But that's another story. Personally, I think that
any Canadian who doesn't speak fluent French should be stripped of his/her
citizenship and sent south, but that's just my personal opinion and, unlike
you, I'm not promoting my crackpot view on a newsgroup or anywhere else.)
