That sounds like its a stone/rubble/stone structure. If you don't know the structure it will have (assuming its stone) facing stone on each side with rubble infill in the middle. You can not make a small hole through this type of structure. But IMO much better than adobe brick. The roof integrity is important with this structure. Leaks over the wall can wash out the wall material.
