Latest on UK State pensions -

Pensions after Brexit

The UK government will continue to pay a State Pension to those eligible in the EU after Brexit. Your UK State Pension will be uprated in April 2020, 2021 and 2022 if you live in the EU, EEA or Switzerland.

From what I understand after 2022, UK State Pensions for UK citizens living in EU countries will no longer be increased annually unless the host country (in our case Hungary) has reached a reciprocal agreement with the UK government to do so..

Ok. So. After B Day (whenever it actually is) we all need to apply for permanent residency but this will be a rubber stamp exercise as long as we have the paperwork in order. One thing I am not 100% on is I already have a registration card from the Immigration Office in Budapest. Will this be ok or do you think I will have to re register? It doesn't have an expiry date on it and I was never given any kind of time frame when I did the original applications.

Have I understood the basic situation ok?

I should be ok as I have just accepted a professional level job in Budapest and will be starting quite soon (EEEK!!!) so don't have to rely on the ostermelo. If all the prospective employers I have spoken to recently are pretty relaxed about employing a Brit that is a good sign no?

First of all, congratulations on the job - hope it works out ok!

My understanding - Yes, we will have to re register - and be given a new card (as non EU citizen) that will supersede the original registration.

Fortunately for us the Hungarians are pretty relaxed about our continuing presence here.

Well, my wife is Hungarian, so I'm sure once I have gone through the formalities I'd be made very welcome.

I visited a friend in Osijek over the weekend, taking the (recently reinstated) Pécs - Beli Manastir train. Border checks were done on the train at Magyarbóly and on the platform at Beli Manastir. The Croatian border policeman chatted with me, informing me that I would need a Hungarian residence card with photo if the UK leaves the EU with no deal.

My wife's permanent residence card has not arrived after 5 weeks and her old card has expired. Győr office told me it was being processed and I am wondering if they are holding off making an EU permanent residence card and then have to exchange it for a spouse of a non EU citizen card.

The Croatian border policeman is correct. If you haven't got or started the process of getting residency then all the information says get it or start the process before Brexit, i.e as soon as possible.

My information is that after Brexit the residency card for an EU citizen will be exchanged for a non-EU citizen type with no problems.

Would this be a specific permanent residence card or as the one I got from the Immigration Office when we moved over? As far as I was aware that was the official residence card for EU citizens? Or is it we have to do a separate process for a different permanent residency and then that is what gets swapped over? I love this stuff. much of the time it is not entirely clear exactly what it is we all have to do.

I have worked here for a while and no-one has ever asked for anything further to that.
