It personally does not bother me and find the argument has little to do with consumer choice, workers rights or religion but rather about big business pushing the notion that we must be able to purchase stuff 24 hours a day 7 days a week from them, placing further pressures on small independent retailers!
Being retired now it doesn't bother me either as I can shop all other days. I know when I worked a good deal of shopping was done on Sundays so I feel a little sorry that this freedom is closed off for others.

The big business conspiracy theory is not agreed. If people didn't want to shop on Sundays the shops would not have found it economic to open. It is more likely a pay back by Fidesz to their Christian Democrat partners don't you think?

Big business does a lot of things that have short term negative economic impacts in order to forge a domineering position in the market place which to my mind reduces both economic and commercial freedom.

Anything that favours small family run business is a positive to my mind and I would love to see more of it, even if it is a wee bit clumsy

I'm with llareggub - I think the only people who will "suffer" as a result of this are the big businesses. Diddums.

Whether you're religious or not, doesn't it feel nice that now there is one day in the week that you DON'T have to run around like headless chickens and can spend some time with family in relaxation? Personally I'm tired of the 24hr, 7 day a week, gotta have it all and gotta have it NOW mentality of the UK and this is one of the reasons that I'm choosing to move to what I consider a more civilized country - this Sunday closing thing is just icing on the cake to me. In fact I don't think these measures go far enough - bring back half day closing on a Wednesday or Thursday too!

No-one has ever required you to shop on a Sunday. If you don't want to then don't. The problem is when you start to impose your choices on others by using the law & banning things. I rather agree that it is good to keep a quiet family day - but a family can make that decision if it wishes & stay away from the shops - surely. We are not children requiring others to dictate.

Not if mummy's job is working on the till and the store treats all days as the same when drawing up the shift rota.

Or as @Watchpost says sometimes you are not in a financial position to turn down that type of work, those people tend to be the folk with no choice but feed your desire for choice!

Life is complicated and always confusing but occasionally opting for the less sensible option 'hurts' fewer people.

NB: As with everything other opinions are available and no one has the answer!

There is the crux of the matter & I agree no-one should be required to work on Sunday. Effective controls & labour laws might meet that problem. Students often took up the work in the UK.

There is room for different opinions & choice on many things in life but not if the law is used to close off choice & impose one persons or a particular religions behaviour preferences on all.

It effected me a week or so back when I ran out of paint & OBI was closed but that was my bad planning & not the end of the world!

I agree with John. I'm all for laws to protect employees from exploitation but if some people want to work in shops on Sunday and some people want to shop on Sunday they should be allowed to do so. I rarely shop on Sunday myself these days as I nearly always seem to be going to specialist places like plumbing or electrical merchants which will be closed anyway.

I'm with Hungary Hippo here. Sure, no one forces us to shop on Sundays but there'll always be one family member who is going to sneak off to the hypermarkets and wreck the family gathering and/or day of rest. Suffice to say if there's a sports event taking place on a Sunday then the family gathering day is also wrecked!

95% of the time when we are in Hungary we have managed to get every one together for a family event, albeit every one turns up at different times and also leave to go on to another event, i.e. teenagers gathering.
