Default Self-employed entertainer, Budapest

Hello all,

I was hoping this wouldn't become so complicated, but alas it has.

I am a jazz pianist and will play in all the big-name hotels in BP following successful interviews/demonstrations, but they can't employ me (regrettably!) until I can provide Hungarian invoices for tax purposes.

Perhaps this is incorrect? Only onle hotel guy told me this (Corinthia) but he is a (Hungarian) musician with a band so he did know a thing or two about self-employment and tax, just not the details for a Londoner like me!

I've got a flat and I'll be moving in on August 18, so I have an address. I also have a CIB bank account.

What should I do to become self-employed as an entertainer? I found some English language Hungarian government website on taxation but that was just all the complicated blabber about rules, nothing specific.

Once I'm registered, I'll be able to start performing immediately, so I'm in limbo at the moment!

Many thanks to all and more than happy to perform anywhere you think would be inerested in my services as a jazz pianist!

Many thanks in advance,
Liszt

You can get registered as self-employed in a Document Service Center (called Okmanyiroda in Hungarian).

You can book an appointment on this website: http://www.nyilvantarto.hu/en/

Choose the 'Idopontfoglalas' (book an appointment) button on the right of the page.

In the popup window click on 'Idopontfoglalas'. (yes again)

Then choose 'Egyeni vallalkozoi ugyek' (Private entrepreneur issues).

Then choose 'Egyeni vallalkozoi tevekenyseg megkezdesenek bejelentese' (Announcement of Private entrepreneur activity).

Then choose 'Budapest fovaros'.

Then you can choose the most convenient Office and also choose the time.

Hi Liszt
How long will you be working in Hungary? if its for a short period only then if you can give invoices in the UK then you should be able to give the same UK invoice here. This would be easier for you and probably cheaper in terms of tax and NI as well. The Hotels should be able to accept an invoice from another EU country without problems especially if it does not have VAT, but if it does even then it is a simple matter to do the VAT accounting, complicated only be the fact that the rates are different.

rgl: many thanks for the site, but I don't see the buttons you see, even when I put it in Hungarian and English?

Peter: It will be long-term. I have no intention on leaving Hungary so I want to be legal from the outset. Due to this, I was advised (by Four Seasons and Corinthia hotels over the other 5* establishments) to get into a position to be legally employed or they cannot emply me; if I/they get caught out, massive fines for both of us and my reputation tarnished - I don't want that!

So, I'd simply like to get in such a position to have an 'invoice book' as he called it which has my name and a tax number. Thus, I keep the stub for my records and they keep the main receipt/invoice and can thus pay me accordingly.

It will be regular work and could go into the many hundreds of thousands of forints a month, so I don't want to mess around with the government of the country I love so much.

Trust this helps with any future responses!

Best,
Liszt

Hi Liszt, I did merge this with the post Peter advised you to read but as there was a duplicate post, I think that one has been deleted and this one left in lace. Self employed is not the same here as in the UK and it is a far bigger can of worms than simply "registering" as self employed. Unless things have changed since I last looked, in depth, at the subject, there are only certain professions which can register as "self employed" as we know it. As a casual or seasonal worker, you can register online and input your hours etc though that won't apply to you.
This is the thread I previously linked to, in your circumstances, it might be worth considering a BT and Kata

I much appreciate your efforts. Yes, my browser went funny when I submitted the post and it showed twice but I saw no button to delete one of them!

I have read this thread, but I'll read again and then go off and search such terms in more detail.

Many thanks!

================================================== ====

Apologies for not making my previous post easier to follow.

There are ten image buttons on both the English and Hungarian versions of http://www.nyilvantarto.hu/en/. They are on the right hand side of the page.

The Idopontfoglalas image button is the fourth one down. Immediately underneath this image button is the prompt in English "Time appointment at Document Service Centres". Clicking on this prompt will also lead to the next correct sub menu.

At the appointment with the Document Service Center you will require a translator, preferably one that can navigate through Hungarian bureaucracy.

You're welcome. Not sure if you read Hungarian, though you can always google translate to get the gist of the information here this will tell you all you need to know and more about a sole trader which, as far as I am aware, is different from what we would class as "self employed" as this is a categorisation reserved for professions such as doctors, . However, I would suggest your first port of call should be an accountant as for many reasons - least of all tax, licences, qualifications - you really should take advise on the options open to you - especially as regulations seem to change on a regular basis. Most accountants offer a free initial consultation and it is worth consulting two or three to compare services/charges.

Good luck
