Re: Renewing Hungarian Driving Licence
Applied for a Hungarian license from UK version this week. Paid 1500ft and they will notify me when the Hungarian one is at the office and I have to give them my UK as I collect the new one. I had my medical just before Christmas and applied this week. I noticed on the form that expiry of the Hungarian one is 2021 which is 2 years, my Birthday is in March and I am between 60 and 70. I assume this is correct and assume when I "renew" in 2021 I will get 3 years??

The question about buses is because there is a mis-match between the UK licence groups and the Hungarian groups. The UK licence with a normal car licence (category B) allows you to drive a mini bus with up to 16 seats. In Hungary a B category limit is 9 (inc driver). In Hungary more than 9 seats is a bus so that to convert a UK licence to give 16 seats here would give you a bus licence. The same applies to weight limits, the UK licence is more generous with weight limits than Hungary so a UK B conversion can give you a CE group in Hungary (vehicle plus trailer over 3.5 ton). When my licence (UK licence full motor bike and car licence) was converted (in 1996) because of the rounding up of the groups I have A, BE, CE and DE which means I have a licence to drive anything unless it has tracks. - so no tanks.

Called today, she stated i had my medical Dec 2018 so on my Birthday in March I will have a further 2 years (total 3 years ). So I should have got my medical in 2019?? then I would have got 3 years. The "first year" i assume was from the date of the medical to the end of December, now thats a short year.

Re: Renewing Hungarian Driving Licence
So …. after four days of trying, I finally got to see the village doctor who is based in the next village. The doctor is a bit unconventional, long hair and a penchant for heavy rock music, but he and his young female assistant spoke enough English between them to help me sort out a medical so I can exchange my driving licence to a Hungarian one.
The medical itself was straightforward enough and the doctor was satisfied that I am fit to drive and the assistant fed all of my details into the computer … including tax number, EHIC card, residency and address details, mothers name etc …. but the computer said no …. they could not print out the medical certificate as the computer was asking for a Hungarian social security number which I don't have. I guess that comes when you have a TAJ card, but I don't have one yet, mainly because I am back and forth to the UK and have been told that when you get a TAJ card, you lose your UK national insurance number as you can't have both …. and I'm not ready to give up my national insurance number as yet. The upshot was, after taking over an hour and keeping other patients waiting, I was advised to go to a doctor in town as "they use a different computer programme" … huh ??? ! In fairness to the doctor, it is probably the only time he will ever have an expat ask for a medical certificate !
So, I went to the local bar to kill two hours to wait for the village bus. Just as I was preparing to leave, the doctor appeared and asked the barman, who speaks good English, to draw me a map of the location of the doctor in town, which he did. The doctor then receives a call and following a bit of a heated exchange with the caller, he asked me to forget the doctor in town and report to him tomorrow morning and my medical certificate will be ready …. I will see what transpires tomorrow !!
