I can see where you are coming from. Ideally, I'd like to move out right now. I have no family ties, both parents are no longer alive. Relations with my only sibling, a sister, are non-existent so the only family I now have are my wife's in Hungary. We have a good circle of deaf friends in Budapest, Miskolc and the surrounding area. Not long to go before mortgage paid off. Only four years to go to reach 30 years NHS service. If my employers offered early retirement I would take it. There were quite a few redundancies recently for former colleagues whose jobs had been contracted out but my department was not affected.

My wife could do a teaching job in Hungary because she has PTLLS and CTTL qualifications but it might mean elbowing out her Hungarian friends because of her specialist area which is sign language! Not something I would recommend. The pay for that is much better in the UK, £25 - £35 per hour but in Hungary it wouldn't be much more than the cost of a bag of peanuts in this country!

Hi Guys

Just moved to Budapest from London. Husband posted here for two years. The plan for me is to commute till October. Have been here two weeks, moved into an apartment in district V. Have acquainted myself with the transport system and done the grocery grind.

Not too sure about the place. Feeling apprehensive about coming here in October and finding a job. Have an MA in English Literature from King's and am currently a broadcast journalist. Thinking of getting a CELTA done till October to hopefully be able to find a job.

I'm no Brit (but my sister is married to an Englishman ...) but I got interested in this forum because I'm living part time in Hungary near the Balaton where also many Brits are so I thought we might exchange some info. The other half of the year we live on the banks of the river Neckar near the Black Forest.
I've already put the first question re the Balaton airport up in the corresponding thread.

I've had the house in a village near Hévíz for more than 15 years together with my first wife which died of cancer ...

And I was really lucky, when being already an old geezer, I found a new wonderful Hungarian partner - we were both already over 60 and have been happily together now for more than 8 years!

We are new members too and wea re looking at buying a property in Hungary this summer. It does seem to be a bit of a minefield - different people saying don't trust them trust me etc. Who do we believe - Can anyone who has bought give us some recommendations please

Well for watt is worth think of traveling to and from I am close to Budapest just over 1.20 I can be on a Plane back to UK
But others the posh ones live south 2-3 hrs. drive property prices very I personally would go for some think cheep, do it up and enjoy the rewards without spending a lot, recently land was reserved for Hungarian's Zartkert now foreigner's can by this land ok it takes long to purchase but saving a lot on price I wont say any moor as others will be sharping their Knives digger47

We have been out here near Lake Tisza since 2008 (my wife was 30 and I was 34) and we love it, life is certainly very different but very rewarding

I've lived in Northern Hungary for the past 8 years and bought a house in a village off the beaten track. When I first arrived I didn't know a soul and my Hungarian was non existent (not that it's much better now). I love living here, people are so kind and helpful and I and my two dogs have been totally accepted as part of the community.

We didn't over think it, our way was probably not the best.... Essentially went to a music festival, got drunk, looked at a load of houses, bought one, got married, quit work, sold up in the UK and moved to Hungary, all in 6 months

But you really could drive yourself insane trying to find the 'perfect spot' and what may be perfect now may not be so perfect in X months or years time when life is very different how you anticipated it being.

Essentially we had a rough idea of what we wanted to do with our new lives and purchased a house that we thought would work for that and then made everything else happen ourselves

Yes, life can be strange - you can't plan everything ...

Like me losing my first wife, falling into a deep hole and then suddenly someone I knew in Hévíz comes up to me telling me:

Hey, I've got the perfect partner for you!

And now we are both over 70, been together more than 8 years and extremely happy together.
What are the chances of finding someone who shares your tastes in food, music, literature and everything at this advanced age? It's like a lottery win - or maybe a miracle?

Anyway Hungary is full of nice people (not counting the government though ...)!

I completely agree about finding the 'perfect spot'. For me and my wife it would be where my wife's family live and where we already have friends. We know it will be more of a case of what's available when we eventually move over. It's likely we might have to spend a bit more money to get what we want but as long as we get it we'd be happy.
