I know it's no consolation but sadly you aren't the only one. Nothing to do with being naive or reckless, simply that most British people aren't used to this type of building and if it's standing, no serious cracks and looks solid, it's easy to assume the building is sound. I only know as much as I do about adobe houses having extensively researched them when considering buying Bulgaria and now having personal experience of owning one - albeit a small one.
