I've joined Balaton Brits. There seems to be alot of conflicting information on who can enter Hungary. My post at 2:26pm probably doesn't mean anything if someone who has a registration card and address card can't get back into Hungary! I'm now at confused.com.

I'll probably end up a stateless person like in the film 'Terminal One'!

I have a neighbor from the UK who also lives in Hungary full time with only a Residency card (Not permanent) who went to Croatia last week on holiday, will be interesting to see if she is allowed back in tomorrow when she is scheduled to return.

On FB BB or Brits in Hungary there's a few who have crossed the border without any issues. The border security didn't seem too bothered.

I did go over the border into Slovenia last week with an Austrian friend whose car still has Austrian plates. We had our documents inspected going into Slovenia and the official wouldn't let me in just with my UK passport but was fine once I had showed him my (temporary) resident card and address card. On our return later the same day, the Hungarian officials gave us a cursory glance and we drove straight through the checkpoint without needing to stop .... but I would guess Budapest airport would be a completely different story ....
There seems to be many conflicting and confusing stories regarding entry for UK citizens holding the temporary resident card (Regisztracios Igazolas) and wether a police permission letter is required for entry back into Hungary !

THere's one Brit who is flying into Hungary today and his Hungarian wife filled in an online form which apears to be for border crossings only. What mystifies me is that there is no option for Budapest Airport so I have no idea what she entered. I'm going to message her to ask how she overcame this.

I have just found out that if you have an account for this website https://ugyintezes.police.hu/en/ugyinditas-ellenorzes the form is different to if you do not have an account.

I would hazard a guess that is because even if you are at 20,000 feet in the air on an aircraft, it is still technically a border crossing when you enter Hungarian air space ....

......the following persons are allowed to enter Hungary without restrictions:

....EU nationals and nationals of EEA member states and Switzerland (excluding UK)
I knew this day would come but my heart sank when I read that, are we classed as "third country" already even though we are still in the transition period?

I think that is due more to the UK's high infection rate rather than the politics, though, as you imply, it's a sad portent of things to come.

The Hungarian government are probably upset UK is pulling out of the EU because there's less money in the coffers for the poorer countries! I've seen a massive improvement of Hungary's infrastructure since they joined in 2004. Something doesn't sit right with this "new" perspective of the British!

It doesn't help in the way the UK report their figures ... there is a world of difference between those that die with the virus rather than from the virus ... but it would seem that if someone passes away from any cause and is also positive with the virus, the cause of death is recorded as from the virus ....

It's all looking bleak for me, the wife and dog. No way can we risk flying over only to be told we don't meet the entry requirements! I'm curious .... has anyone been deported when they have arrived at Budapest Airport without the appropriate permission from the Hungarian Police?

The regulations above say who is allowed in
  • Hungarian nationals,
  • EU nationals and nationals of EEA member states and Switzerland (excluding UK),
  • third country family members of the above mentioned persons,
Which means that your wife is allowed in (as Hungarian) and you as a 'family member of the above mentioned' are also allowed in. At worst I could envisage a 2 week quarantine in your place of stay and where such quarantine has been imposed the police have made periodic checks to see if it is being kept. Whilst things may change in the next few weeks the regulations across Europe seem to be getting easier

I recall that somebody in this forum posted a while ago that people were being deported from the airport. Don't think that will happen to you as you are married to a Hungarian.
