Dog Walking
#1
I see there is already a thread on this subject but it has been closed. I have experienced the same as others in villages. I am the only person who walks a dog in my village and he sets all the other village dogs off barking when we pass their homes, even on the opposite side of a wide road. I avoid taking Charlie on one particular section of road as there are so many noisy dogs. Charlie is not frightened in most cases, although he did get attacked a few weeks ago by a dog that got out through a gap in the fence.
My problem is that people shout at me for walking my dog, mainly for the noise pollution from the guard dogs but also in case he fouls the verge, as villagers are responsible for maintaining the verge between their property and the road.
His walk is the highlight of highlight of his day, he literally jumps for joy when he sees me with the lead. He also loves meeting other dogs, even if just to touch noses through the bars of a fence. There are one or two friendly ones who will do this. If I drive him to a quiet lane somewhere every day he will get no interaction with other dogs.

This happened to me when I lived in a village in Bulgaria. Villagers do not walk their dogs.

I find it really sad whenever I am in Hungary and never see any dogs being taken for a walk. I dunno why the neighbours complain about the noise pollution when you walk past with your dog because whenever I walk past a house without a dog they always bark so it's not your dog's fault. Friends of mine living in the same village as my parents-in-law walk their dog but I am not sure how often they do it now because they used to take it to a small lake so it could also have a bit of a swim but dogs have been banned from the lake since this year! Not sure why because even people are not allowed to swim in the same lake but they still do!
Maybe you should get a second dog so your dog has interaction with a doggie friend? We have two dogs back in the UK and cannot imagine them without each other.
I never thought about dogs fouling the verges which are the responsibility of the property owners in front of it. I suppose the only thing you can do is make sure your dog has done it's doggie business before you take it out for a walk.

This is a problem we first encountered, and yes it is very sad that dogs in villages are not properly exercised. We stopped taking our dog out for walks in town when we discovered a woodland nearby which we take our dog to every morning at 6 or 7am. We also have a big garden and our dog loves ball games so we are marshalled outside to play ball quite a lot.
I don't understand why anyone would shout at you, but we always pick up our dog poo, so I can understand that...but not for just walking your dog. If anyone ever had the sheer nerve to shout at me for walking my dog when they treat theirs so appallingly regardless of the noise...well....trust me the air would turn pretty blue!

That is what I do by the route we take. I have about 1.5 acres of land which is a long narrow strip, as it is just the back garden that extends a long way from the house. We go down through my land to a lane that forms the bottom boundary of my field. We then head down this lane, which peters out after becoming a dirt track. We turn round and return to the village on that lane, then there is variety of routes on the village streets and surrounding lanes to complete the walk of an hour or so.

Never heard of anybody shouting at a dog walker! Wouldn't let it put you off though. Since we moved here, there are now a few villagers who walk their dogs, some on leads and some off - before we arrived in the village, nobody walked their dogs so it is pleasing to think we have influenced at least of couple of owners.
So long as you clean up after Charlie and he is on a lead, just ignore them or learn a couple of choice phrases to shout in response. Must say that I would question the type of people they are if they are shouting at you in public as most Hungarians wouldn't embarrass themselves by doing so.

Seems you have a long piece of property, have you looked into a product called 'chuck it', its a device which lets anyone throw a ball much farther than they could without it. Google "chuck it ball launcher" I'm sure it can be ordered from Amazon. Wont help you with your walks but your dog can get lots of excercise.

Same here, Charlie treats any kind of game or toy with contempt, beneath his dignity.. He's not grown out of enjoying having his tummy tickled though!

And digging for moles of course...

Well, perhaps I should not drive out of the village for walking Charlie either.
I did this today to avoid taking him through all the wet grass in my garden. We went about 5km out of the village toward the railway halt. We were parked at the junction with a dirt track road and went for a walk down that track. When we got back about 40 minutes later I found the passenger side door glass had been smashed. It seems to have been an act of pure vandalism, as nothing seems to have been taken, not even the satnav, which was in the glovebox.
I tried to report it to the Police but without success. Right now I feel like giving up on Hungary.......or life.
