On yesterday's Goan Voice page it did say that there would be a follow up next week - on 24th it has changed to - there is expected to be a follow up programme.

Hi,
Have just come back from a weekend away, read this thread and listened to the Radio 4 broadcast. It sounded to us as if the message was simply that FN's should not attempt to purchase in Goa, that those who have are now caught in a trap and stand to loose everything and that many real estate agents and advocates are still promoting 'sales' to FN's. Isn't that what Douglas has been pretty much promoting since 2006? We don't believe that the program was aimed at getting laws overturned, merely pointing out the fact that FN's should cease buying property. It broadcast two very good interviews with people who did not moan about their situation, gave the facts and held up their hands to the fact that they had made mistakes.
The Goan minister showed no interest and this is the way it has always been in their culture - the little man means nothing.
It may be a small step in the right direction - lets hope so.

emsirrah quoting transcript of "You and Yours" BBC Radio 4 programme: ".....40% of the land of Goa is under foreign ownership - not just UK but from Russia and Eastern Europe who have decided to buy properties in Goa and local Goans feel they are not being properly compensated as the prices of property are enormous......."

[QUOTE=babu1;6387536]I do not believe this to be in any way accurate. Infact, it's ludicrously inaccurate, and there must be some research resource out there, perhaps within the statistical database of the Land Register to disprove this nonsense figure.

That would be a help.

How could this be the case when a good proportion of the 482 FN's have acquired properties in multi occupancy apartment blocks?[QUOTE]

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goa

".....Goa encompasses an area of 3,702 km² (1,430 sq mile).......Goa has a coastline of 101 km (63 miles)......Forest cover in Goa stands at 1,424 km², most of which is owned by the government. Government owned forest is estimated at 1224.38 km² whilst private is given as 200 km²....."

If these statistics are correct, then the State Government of Goa by its ownership of forest land alone owns 33% of the land in Goa, and that is even before considering their other holdings of Plantation, Orchard, Domestic and Commercial land; "land" also meaning "buildings" in this context.

Likewise, significant tracts of land are held in the public interest as Comunidade (Community) and Tenanted land, as are areas of land held and occupied by the numerous local Panchayats and public service organisations such as schools, hospitals, police, fire service, cattle pounds, sports recreation, etc.....

Then you come to the remaining land which must include the vast tracts of open strip mining areas which are privately owned; all other Industrial and Commercial land, including wholesale and retail shopping outlets which are owned by Goans, and all other Residential, Plantation, Harbour or Orchard land in private or corporate Goan ownership.

Next comes those areas of land owned by out of State Indians and NRI's, some of which are the locus for starred resort and other commercial enterprises, and for Domestic purposes as "holiday homes", not forgetting the large speculative financial interest of Indian and NRI land investors who work in hand with the Goan builder's lobby, and certain prominent Goan politicians.

At the bottom of the statistical heap are the 482 foreign nationals (Population of Goa as at last census, 2001: 1.628 million) of whom this ridiculous statement has been made by a Goa State Cabinet Minister; "...40% of the land of Goa is under foreign ownership - not just UK but from Russia and Eastern Europe who have decided to buy properties in Goa and local Goans feel they are not being properly compensated as the prices of property are enormous....."

There was an item on the program today - a sort of trailer for tomorrow's Face the Facts - someone called Wendy gave a very clear and accurate summary of the situation she and many of us are in.
