question, with your one year x visa, after your 180 days how long did you have to be out of the country?

The 180 days applies to Tourist visas. An X visa is an entry visa, often extendable within the country.

... two months (and it was stamped in the passport using up most of half a page)

Previously X visas were generally extendable in India, they probably still are for PIO's and their spouses and children, but for the last few years extensions have routinely been refused for FNs.

Confused I am now Andy?

We are repeatedly told that 60 day exile only applies to Tourist Visa and now you are telling us it applies to "X" visa?

Me too?? And the x visa holders are often refused extension to FNs? So basically an x visa is almost the same as a 1 yr tourist visa?

OH still has 2 years to run on his 5 year X visa (PIO) and no restrictions only register if staying more than 180 days. (We have never tried to extend). As I have said before I was refused in Aug. as necessary docs. had changed. I have 1 year T.

Recently?

Re: Visa help.

I have recently taken advice on this matter on behalf of a close friend.
Foreigners apparently can extend their x visas in India, however you must start the application to do so at least 8 - 10 weeks prior to the visa expiry date.

I was told that many have been refused extension purely because they have not applied until it is too late for the process to be done.

Apparently the process is that the application has to be done in the state in which you are mainly residing. The application then goes to the Delhi Home Ministry. International police checks get done, followed by local police checks, then it returns to the Home Ministry. Only the Home Minister can issue the extension. However some visas are marked as non extendable and these cannot be extended in India.
The FRO at Panjim are only empowered to grant up to a 7 day extension apparently.

This was confirmned by the person phoning the Home Ministry in my presence, which does tend to suggest there is the possibility of getting an 'in house' extension. That said, getting past the FRO personnel is another factor entirely.................

Dread - x

Sorry, my confusion I think - as quoted in #691 - I got a 1 year T this time - that is what had the 1/2 page '180 day' stamp. My previous X visas have never had '180 day' stamps, just 'Registration not required if...' stamps.

As to X visa extensions I have tried applying at Jaisalmer House, Delhi and at Panjim which included police checks and an interview with Mapusa CID (who assured me there would be no problem). Both applications were refused. I have also spoken to other people who applied in Panjim and were told in no uncertain terms that the Goa Home Dept. do not like long term stayers / property owners and they would never give permission.
If you do manage to get an extension then Jaisalmer House send a letter to Panjim FRO and they issue the extension - I think (and this is borne out by the MHA X visa FAQ) that they do this by extending your Residential Permit, which explains a lot of confusion that occurred e.g. with Americans staying on 10 year T ********* RP.

Two months out definitely only applies to tourist visas! certainly not business or accompanying spouse visas!

If you read under News and Notices on the VFS Global web site it clearly states that the 2 month gap does not apply to any other type of visa. ie Business or Entry(X).
