If you have been given special permission to return within two months you have to register with the police in Panjim within 14 days of returning. You have to go to the police station to collect three copies of a form which you have to complete (no carbon allowed) and return to the police station with three colour photocopies of your passport and visa, passport photos and proof that you are residing where you say you are. Sound familiar, these are the same forms and other paperwork that had to be produced when registering because you had entered the country on an X visa. Most of the data on the form is what was given to the HCI to get permission in the first place.

and after a few visits, we got "don't bother to come until your five year visa is up":rofl::rofl: we always went as you never knew when they were going to change their minds. :thumbdown: better to have been safe than sorry.

Let's hope so, Goacrazy56. Someone told me this had happened in the '90s and disappeared as quickly as it had appeared, but way back then I was only worrying about whether I would be able to squeeze 2 x 2 week holidays into the validity of the 6 month visa - how naive of me!

Can anyone remember that?

I remember in the 70s only 3 month visa's, by post took 6 weeks but you could specify start time.:(

evenly as recently as the mid nineties it was a 3 month visa valid from date of first entry.old passports in uk so no positive evidence but pretty sure of this.

HAVE HAD AN UPDATE! applied for 5 year visa in dec 96 to be told we had to have a 1 year visa first. applied 1 year later to be told 5 year visas were stopped 2 weeks ago. 1997.

Just had my passport back today from the Indian Embassy in Bangkok,they let me fill the paperwork in about 10 days ago but would not issue it until 2 months gap of leaving India.
I got 6 months which is what i applied for,the typewriter must have broken so they have written my name by hand (only my first and middle name,not my last name!) and the mistake has been initialed but i can see that causing problems. Also where it says number of entries that used to say "multiple" it says "double" so i presume i can leave once. Says nothing about a 2 month gap although if i left i would of thought i would have to stay out 2 months.
Totally confused! :confused:

I found the lonely Planet thread confusing - what is the rule that changed? from what to what and back to which?
afaik the new rules are 1 month between visas and 2 months between visits.

In all the stuff I read it never actually said that anything about two months between visas just two months between visits. Perhaps visa service has been misreading and misapplying the rules.

Thanks for these last 2 replies. EVERYTHING I read on different sites about the new regulations is confusing. As I'm now resigned to not applying for my next visa till 12th March and spending 2 further weeks in WET London, I'm just going to "go with the flow.....".

A friend has just returned yo UK from Goa..She is on a 1 year Tourist Visa which doesn't expire until end August. She had a 2 week exit in Nov/Dec - no problem there, and she flew out of Mumbai on Thursday with apparently NO 2 month stamp on her visa, just the usual exit stamp! She is on a French passport, but as she has lived in the UK for the past 40 years, her visa was issued by HCI in London.

She is going to go to HCI next week to clarify the situation about when she can return................will keep you posted.........
