Don't know if you are North or South Goa, but one of the guys who owns S2 has a restaurent on the Calangute Baga border called Sudans. Very nice food there as well - and reasonably priced, as with the drinks.
If you're North Goa, you go down the Baga Road from the junction of Calangute main road and Sudans is in the first road on the left.

Dread - foodie

Just heard first hand that a shack owner we know who didnt get a licence in the "lottery" has bought one for rs30,000 from someone who got two! And they wanted rs60,000 to start with!
All reports coming out of Cal/Can say it is absolutely dead so how the hell do they think they will get a return? Youve got to be looking at a lakh by the time they are up and running which means a clear profit of 10k a week BEFORE they start to actually make anything. Obviously they have discontinued that sensible idea of making each shack display the granted licence with a photo of the successful applicant on it, which would have stopped this criminal practice of applying for more than one licence. Or would it? The owner of the licence would probably have sat in the receiving shack drinking free booze all day and claiming to be running it!
At the end of the day, the incredible stupidity of the average Goan will always win through, its what keeps them at the level they are and nothing will change that......................

All shacks on the Candolim stretch have been up and running for over a week!
but as you say it is very quiet and how are they going to get their money back. Shacks are charging for sunbeds some 100 rups each!!!. others 100 for 2. Our shack is lucky it is doing business from the return customers but the numbers of them are definately down, and then you read the article by the Tourist Minister to-day, should be put on our joke thread.

Whats the article about Noni? Let me guess, numbers are up; having a fantastic season; will have to have a new airport next year as we don't have space for all the tourists that want to come here; no one is being raped or murdered... blah blah blah

And here we are again. With just a few days to go before the idiotic shack licence lottery is due to get underway ..........

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/c...ow/6614511.cms

All very well but how can they make the claim that shacks are run by the same families for generations, with the lottery in place? Couldn't involve bribery and corruption could it?

(just noticed Noni's post above from last season........he got his come-uppance, didn't he?)

Thanks J5.
as it took me 15 mins to upload this item I thought I would save you all time and copy and pasted it.

taken from Times of India

PANAJI: The ubiquitous beach shack on Goa's beaches could soon be history as the draft Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) does not permit any such activity.

The release of the draft CRZ prompted the Shack Owners Welfare Society (SOWS) to swing into action. An emergency meeting of its members was called on Wednesday morning.

A resolution has been passed that SOWS will write to Union minister for enviornment and forests Jairam Ramesh that beach shacks must be covered in the ambit of the new CRZ rules.

"Goa is perhaps the only state in the country to have beach shacks. We are collecting evidence to show the Union minister that beach shacks has been a traditional business for people living in the coastal areas of Goa. The first shacks were set up in the 1960s, and the business is being run by families spanning generations," Cruz Cardozo, president of SOWS told TOI after the meeting concluded.

Around 801 applications have been submitted to the tourism department last week, all vying for 346 beach shacks to be put up all across the state's beaches for tourism season 2010-11.

"We are collecting documents as evidence to prove to the union minister that shacks were very much in existence prior to the introduction of the CRZ in 1991. Beach shacks are part of Goa's tourism landscape. Even foreign tourists who put up in the starred hotels prefer to lounge in a beach shack for the entire day. If beach shacks are not included in the new CRZ rules, it will end up in killing Goa tourism and our livlihoods," Cardozo said.

SOWS general secretary John Lobo said that shack owners were disappointed that no efforts are being made by the Goa government to protect their traditional business. "No mention has been made about a beach shack in the draft CRZ. We need it to be added to the new rules, but the Goa government is not pushing hard for it," he said.

"Just like the fishermen living on the coast, we are dependant on beach shacks to earn our livlihoods. This is our traditional seasonal activity and we are appealing the union minister to consider our fate," Lobo said.

Goa with the shacks would truly die, they would not need their taxi's, hotels or resturants as the fall in tourists would be astronomical.

The allotment of shacks for North Goa has actually happened today! Lets now see how long it takes the authorities to personally go round and allot the land for each shack!
