Question Ever threatened by Goa cops?

Hi,

We are doing an investigative piece of the Expats brush with the law in the form of corrupt Goa Police. If you have a story of how the police have threatened or hounded you and asked for bribes to leave you alone, tell us your story?

Regards

Sorry to spoil your storyline (for the The Goan on Saturday?) but in all of my admittedly limited dealings with the police in Goa I have found them to be polite and helpful despite being overworked.

Thank You, Andy. Good to know that. James Toner and quite a few of others did not have such kind experiences. We shall factor in your viewpoint if you wish to.

We once had a camera, mobile phone & £100 stolen as someone else left a door unlocked & a security guard helped himself. I went through the nonsense I'd heard about at Colva nick where they wouldn't let me write that it had been stolen & would only let me write that it had been lost - before they would give us a "certificate" to make a claim from our insurance company, for which they charged us Rs 100

This is GOA get real.....you want a load of hassle for a few hundred rupees.
Pay up it helps..... if you are with a local.
Just reflect on fines you pay in the U.K. okay the police might not be corrupt but they have not had to borrow money to get there job.
Regards. A Realist.

Noticed that Old PI Vincy Paes has kicked the bucket from liver disease....probably from drinking too much Johnny Walker Black label whisky he took as backhanders...His nick name in the Goan Police force was Dollar Pies because his specialty was planting drugs on gullible young foreigners in Anjuna and Baga and then shaking them down for hundreds and hundreds of Dollars. Every place he was posted to he ended up suspended for illegal activities.Even when he was finally moved to The Konkan Rail police he ended up suspended again for taking bribes.

You might find someone has had a bad experience but in all the years we have lived there we have never been threatened or hounded, in fact, just the opposite. We have two very good friends who are policemen and the only time we had an official brush with the law because of a break in in an adjacent apartment they were very considerate and concerned about us. That is not to say there is corruption but if you are looking for a story about police corruption then try an African state.

For quite a few visitors the experience hasn't been all that great in Goa http://www.thegoan.net/Goa/Big-Story...UIN/05974.html Do let us know if you have similar stories to tell or have heard of.

We had no problems with the police in over 10 years until last season when we borrowed a friends jeep to go into Panjim and we were stopped on the way back. The police told my son (he was driving) that he could be fined 5000 rupees for hiring a vehicle that was not a proper hire vehicle but my son argued that it was a loan not a hire and phoned our friend who spoke to the police and threatened to complain to his good friend, a senior policeman, so they let us go without paying them.
