The general public make donations to IAR to feed and care for the animalsnot the staff who are on good salaries!! Sadly the animals do not get decent food!! How does doubling the price of sterilisation help to deal with stray dogs! You are obviously an avid supporter of IAR ! I wish you well in dealing with the problem of stray dogs in Goa! I think the general public would like to think that 100% would go to the animals but get real, you have to pay staff and to get good professional staff where ever in the world costs even Goa. Also they do need decent transport, equipment, etc. I am a supporter of organations/people who are trying to make a difference, who don.t just think its not there problem. |

There was really nothing wrong with the old method of control until that stupid ignorant idiot from Delhi, Monica Ghandi, sister of Rajiv Ghandi, decided that it was cruel and inhuman to shoot them just before the Monsoon period.The Dog Man was employed by the Panchyats to shoot the bitches and any diseased , old and infirm dogs.He was an ex-army marksman and the gun was a bolt action 2.2 bullet.It was quick and humane.I am a dog lover, in fact i love most animals to a point and to actually see some of the dogs in terrible diseased conditions during the monsoon period was, to put it lightly, stomach churning.Notices were displayed in the areas at least a week before he started operations, so if you owned a dog, you tied it up or bought it a collar.It was simple, cheep and above all effective at keeping unwanted dogs down to levels where they didnt pack up in the night and go hunting.I have personally seem wild dogs, in Baga, attack cattle during the night and believe me they can make a right mess when they get the blood smell.People forget dogs are just domesticated wolves and when they get into packs to hunt they behave just like wolves.Biting and tearing until they over whelm what ever they are hunting.The fault with the original IAR idea is that a spayed dog is still a dog capable of biting.Just because its reproductive capability has gone, its still capable of hunting and biting and dogs carry rabies too.

Maneka Gandhi, widow of Sanjay Gandhi. I agree not the brightest of people ( She married into that family!!!), I agree she also got it wrong about Goa dogs. But she was the only government person to do anything for animal welfare, and regarding dancing bears, and research animals she did quite a lot. Also as well as the skillful Dog Man; in the South there was something of a free for all amongst the young 2-wheeler brigade shooting and wounding. I think there were protests about this. |

I have no memories of what went on in the South of Goa Bipat. I only comment on what i saw with my own eyes around Anjuna and Calingut.I remember quite well when International Animal Rescue came on the scene in the early 90s.It was situated on the Panjiim Road past the Police Station.We delivered quite a few injured dogs from Candolim to the two girls running the place.But i could never get the logic of taking beach dogs to be spayed or neutered and then dumped back on the beach......It was the short sightedness of this approach that got under my skin.MO, an old friend of mine, sadly now gone to the great kennel in the sky, would take them to IAR, get them done.Feed them up and then go home to Macclesfield leaving the dog to fend for itself during the rains.
Most tourists dont realise how much it costs for anti-rabies shots too.At one time it used to be a series of injections in to the stomach area, now its 5 injections and costs around 1500rps.For some Indian families thats a fortune. |

I agree with you PJ. In the years I have been visiting Goa the number of stray dogs in packs seems to have risen every season and I see more of them every time I return to Goa. Surely this means that spaying the dogs under the current system does not reduce the numbers. The flaw in that scheme is it would require every single dog to be spayed - and there is no way of assuring that every dog will be found and treated. Nobody wants these dogs, they live a horrible existence, they are not happy creatures, so surely being cruel to be kind is the better option Dread - x |
