Where is the 1000 capacity car park. Reading the whole article I am left wondering if it is the same Dabolim I land in every year or is it in another country.

Another gem - bigging up Goa from the Tourist Association - 18th Sept Goan Voice entitled - Goa faces bleak future on tourism front.

Goa’s pathetic infrastructure is another factor. According to Travel & Tourism Association of Goa chairman Ralph D’Souza, bad roads along the state’s coast coupled with no night life has caused the downfall, “Prices have shot up, people want some entertainment. But how long can we satisfy them with beaches?” he added.

We have quite a few personal friends who are Consultants in different fields. They each take a month a year to go to India (unpaid) to help the locals (operate on them etc) and update their Indian counterparts of the latest technics.

The first chartered flight, Minar which was supposed to land at Dabolim airport in Goa from Moscow on September 27 has cancelled its trip holding up the season to next month. ‘‘That was the only chartered flight expected in this month. Rest will start coming from October,’’ TTAG President Ralf D’Souza said. ‘‘Even in October there are 14 landings expected but many of them are not confirmed,’’ he added.He said that out of 800 slots booked at Dabolim airport this season, 500-odd are confirmed.

It certainly hasn't taken long for what was 'hot news' about the season starting at the end of September to change - what odds that none of the 14 October charters land either?

Even as foreigners look for other long-haul destinations, domestic tourists will throng Goa’s beaches and spas during the festive season. According to the state tourism department for the average three lakh foreigners visiting Goa, the total number of Indians flocking state has increased to 22 lakh as of March 2008.

Unlike an average seven day stay by foreigners, Indians prefer a quick weekend break. This won’t brook the state’s loss due to reduced tourist inflow say tour operators. They hope that year-end festivities will break the jinx.

If that indeed turns out to be the case, I wonder how many shack menus we will see this season in: FRENCH, GERMAN, ITALIAN, CHINESE, JAPANESE etc etc OR will it be the usual ENGLISH & RUSSIAN. . . . . . . . . .

I think 'Mr. Yatra' might just be 'one-off' as this is fast growing into a global crisis and the affects will percolate down to all.
The effect was felt in Russia this week, causing them to keep their Stock Exchange shut most days because of falling prices , just putting off the evil day, I think.
Perhaps they should have considered these type of repercussions as (in the title of an old song)....... 'They were Marching to Georgia' !!

Canada, Australia travel advisories blacklist India

PANJIM, SEPT 18 – In a move which could dent tourism in India and Goa in particular; the governments of Australia and Canada have issued travel advisories asking their citizens to avoid travel to the country.

Looks like a 'land of confusion. . . . . . .'

As per the information provided by a top official in the Department of Tourism, who did not want to be named, Goa annually gets around 3000 Canadian tourists and around 6000 Australian tourists. He also rubbished claims that the first charter which was scheduled to land on September 28 has been cancelled due to terror strikes. “As per my information, the charter is landing on its original date,” the official stated.

However, what is pertinent to note is that once a government advisory is issued the citizens are not entitled for travel insurance. and that really isn't going to put any tourists off now is it. . . . . . . . . .

All foreign tourists must be insured, and insurance companies decide their premiums depending on the country of travel, D’Souza said, adding that if tourists are not insured, the liability comes on tour operators. As insurance companies are waiting for new travel advisories from their countries, they are unwilling to extend insurance just now, D’Souza said.


So out of they myriad reasons available, it now looks like the downturn this season will be the fault of the insurance companies. . . . . . . . . . .
