would suggest searching out sify and doing it that way as my friends that have sify are getting far better download speed than me.

only BSNL offer real broadband - and that is - er - not very good

I have BSNL unlimited. Not the quickest but does me fine. Cost 750 rupees a month + VAT etc. My monthly bill is 1026 rupees, that is for landline and broadband. You can get much quicker but they also cost a lot more. If I am downloading music, audiobooks & movies or UK TV programmes, I just leave my computer on 24 hours a day and at no extra cost.

calina666, did you get your bsnl unlimited connection in benaulim ? is the modem included in the price or is there some other initial cost associated with this . assuming it is the same company (bsnl) that provides the landline, how long does it take to get a landline and what paperwork is required when applying for a landline and internet connection ? thanks

it seems to be based on personal experience?

I've never heard of anyone getting those sort of speeds even on 3G in the UK.
I also haven't heard that 3G is available in Goa - still, here is the link to the Tata page
... thinking about it, if this is 3G and there are only a handful of people using it then these speeds are possible, but I think it will downgrade for every new user added!

Re: Broadband in Goa

I have rented the latest high speed plug in card for my laptop which is giving speeds of between 25 kbps to 100 kbps which is great for Skype and utube downloads etc.

The price is RS 150 per day (minimum 1 week rental for 1GB downloads per week) a deposit of RS 3600 - refundable at the time of returning the equipment. I am aware they have other packages available. ID requirements are copy of passport/visa and address confirmation.

I can get contact details should anyone require it.

my memory may be faulty but I think I used to get those sort of speeds with Airtel in my phone connected to my laptop - it cost Rs. 15/- a day (when they remembered to charge it). ... Or do you mean 100kBps (that's Bytes versus bits i.e about 800 kbps?)

you need a mobile that you can connect to your computer - either bluetooth or a data cable - and some software to load on the computer (mine came with the mobile). Then you need to set up your mobile for data - the Elephant Shop man did mine. The installed software does the rest.

The above setup is pretty much identical to what you would have to do with one of the 'dongles' they are selling now (phone + data connection = dongle)

Thanks Andy
I will go back to the box and gadgets that came with my phone and see if they can be used for this. May have to read the insructions book for once!

Cheers

I still use this method. Its slow but cheap. And it was easy to set up with my Sony Ericsson phone and an Airtel SIM.

To set the SIM you just text something like ACTGPRS and to unset DEACTGPRS - the shop should be able to give the exact details.

it would be naughty of me to suggest that this is just a spoiler for Tatas (equally suspect?) new offering
