When we left Goa they were digging up the roads, saying it was for broadband  but it seems only the internet cafes have it, and that is slowband. We use our mobile phone, and will have to see if there is a better provider next month. Would be interested to know if anybody knows what Vodophone bluetooth connection is like have used one of the others before. |

British mobile or Goan? My Goan mobile provider is Ideal. I did email them to ask if they could provide broadband but they just gave me a phone number to ring. I will ring it when I get to Goa but I wanted any info I could get before I go.
It would be too expensive to use UK mobile. We used Airtel it was not as slow as dial up here, but not as fast as broadband. Don't think you can get mobile broadband out there, but will let you know at the end of the month when we get there and with which provider we go with. You can call into the Airtel - Ideal shops in Panjim for info. Does anybody know how mobile Vodophone is working? and which is the best deal. Broadband you have to have a telephone line, and that takes TIME |

3G is not yet introduced in India. TATA should work fine for your use. I guess you are not a heavy user.

Re: Broadband in Goa
There's a new service going to be launched from tata indicom called photon+ , its supposed to be a wireless broadband service (a dongle which u can plug in ur desktop or laptop) .
though the service is already launched in goa, they haven't started giving the broadband speed for it... the manager informed me that the broadband speeds would start by 30th september 2009 the unit is costing something like rs 3000/- and its like rs 1000/- for 10gb monthly usage. (not sure of exact figures) there's reliance also in the market with similar services. if your requirements are confined only to ur home then there's bsnl broadband and sify broadband.... |

This page seems to offer 3 different alternatives; https://www.ichoose.in/etrade/wireless-internet.jsp If you choose Photon+ it costs Rs3500 for the dongle but you have to select Maharashtra then Mumbai as it does not accept Goa.........? The next choice is the "Whiz" dongle at Rs2500, which as far as I was aware (until you told us differently) was the one available in Goa at present. Its pig-slow and reception in most places is very poor. Checking out this one, it at least allows you to select "rest of Maharashtra" but not Goa. Tariffs for the Photon+ are here http://www.tataindicom.com/hsia-usb-...-personal.aspx I am probably wrong but was under the impression that Photon+ rides on the back of the new 3g networks being rolled out across India that are rather like the new generation of dongles already in use throughout the UK. At present, Goa most certainly does not have 3g. Reading between the lines in your post, could it be that the Tata salesman was actually telling you that Photon+ will not be available until end of September as this is the system with "broadband speeds"? As we have been promised 3g "anytime now" for almost two years, I would take any of these promises with a large pinch of salt............ I notice that in you first paragraph you say it is "going to be launched" whilst in your second paragraph that "the service is already launched in goa". This is rather confusing, could you clarify please........................... |
Re: Broadband in Goa
In margao, tata has already started marketing for the product.. i was told that photon dongle (some offer) is available for purchase HOWEVER you will not receive the broadband speeds (3.2mbps or wotever) until 30th september.
it wud be better to call the office in margao directly rather than check the website... i only hope that photon does work in goa ,its high time we got some real broadband.. |
Re: Broadband in Goa
I purchased the Tata dongle in Calangute in March this year for about 3000 rupees and then 1000 for one months unlimited downloads. I took my laptop to the shop they installed it and set it up and worked fine - not to bad at all my grandaughter loved it was on it everynight on facebook and msn and was quite adequate for my needs as well. All I have to do when I return is top up my monthly download again.

Re: Broadband in Goa
my experience of broadband here is that you are very much in the hands of the supplier and service has been pretty shitty with what is mainly available in vagator. Sify is supposed to be ok, but im with a supplier that uses another one now and it is diabolically slow for downloading. after paying rs8000 for a "box" thought it would be fast, but it takes up to 20 minutues to watch a 5min you tube video, and then if i want to download it onto my system 45 minutes!"!!!!!!
would suggest searching out sify and doing it that way as my friends that have sify are getting far better download speed than me. |

Re: Broadband in Goa
I have BSNL unlimited. Not the quickest but does me fine. Cost 750 rupees a month + VAT etc. My monthly bill is 1026 rupees, that is for landline and broadband. You can get much quicker but they also cost a lot more. If I am downloading music, audiobooks & movies or UK TV programmes, I just leave my computer on 24 hours a day and at no extra cost.

Those of you looking for decent broadband, have a look at this;
http://www.indiamike.com/india/goa-f...a-3g-t63012/2/ (post#23) it seems to be based on personal experience? |

I also haven't heard that 3G is available in Goa - still, here is the link to the Tata page ... thinking about it, if this is 3G and there are only a handful of people using it then these speeds are possible, but I think it will downgrade for every new user added! Re: Broadband in Goa
I have rented the latest high speed plug in card for my laptop which is giving speeds of between 25 kbps to 100 kbps which is great for Skype and utube downloads etc.
The price is RS 150 per day (minimum 1 week rental for 1GB downloads per week) a deposit of RS 3600 - refundable at the time of returning the equipment. I am aware they have other packages available. ID requirements are copy of passport/visa and address confirmation. I can get contact details should anyone require it. CC |

Dread - the one with arrested computer development x The above setup is pretty much identical to what you would have to do with one of the 'dongles' they are selling now (phone + data connection = dongle) AndyD 8-)# |
