Whilst this topic is still live, another warning about arranging to meet a group from other european countries.
If you arrange to meet at half two the Brits and the French will turn up at 2.30 whilst the Dutch, Germans,Poles,Scandinavians and people aged over 45 from Aberdeenshire will be there at 1.30.

Have had a couple of trains go through the local station this evening, so hopefully things will start to get back to normal over the weekend, although I read on France24 that it is ongoing and will probably escalate again next week.

One of the main unions has voted to return to work already but there are still a third of all SNCF workers out on strike and this union has pre-announced a further strike on the 20th December 2007 be warned and this is the moderate one. The other unions themselves are keen to end the strike as well but the workers in the local meetings are voting to stay out so the union management can do nothing about it.

Radio this morning:
30% TGV trains running
40% of the rest
Union voting taking place today with the Government saying:
1. Nothing is NOT up for discussion
2. But we won't discuss that nothing until you get back to work

Haven't had any trains come through here since Friday night.
I feel sorry for the families. Are the unions paying the workers to make up for lost income? This time of year must be especially hard, with Christmas so close. Silly men:

Right, all six unions voted to stay out today for a further 24 hours.
The previsions for monday are:
One in five metros running
40% buses
half of the TGV
and better for the other lines than the weekend
The unions have agreed to meet with employers/govt on Wednesday

The high school students are being invited to take part in action this Thursday against the privatization of higher education!

Spoke with a TGV driver this morning still on strike.

He said that the strikes are coming to an end but only until the 18th December when they will start again IF the negotiations do not go the way the unions want. I understand that the unions recognize that the retirement arrangements that they have will be changed but that they are negotiating that they are recompensed in some way for the supplementary 12% they have been paying on their social charges (this is his explanation not mine). The families clearly are not hoping for the strike to start again just before Christmas. They are not paid during strike action but in the past they have been able to negotiate a partial pay compensation of around 2/3 I think he said. If I hear anything more I'll post. My daughter is due to travel down on the TGV from Bruxelles so I'll be watching.
