I agree with Eurotrash's description of life in the area. There is a big annual fair in Montilly (Foire St Denis) in October which attracts people from all over the region.
Also, not too far away is Tinchebray where there is a cinema showing fairly regular Version Original films (i.e. in English) along with a café (Le Bouilloire) which has regular exhibitions and concerts.
