Default Living/Property Prices in Montpellier

Hello, we are temporarily in Capestang, near Beziers. Its wonderful here. We love the french way of life, the people and everything about it.

We are looking now to buy and are contemplating Montpellier as it is supposed to be thriving according to estate agents/media reports.

Anyone living in or near Montpellier who has a different view? We want to buy privately to avoid costs also. We are thinking of just advertising on angloinfo. Anyone recommend anywhere else? Either land or something to do up. What's it like living in Montpellier.

Your britishexpat usual wonderful advice would be welcomed.

If you want to buy privately then looking in notaires and whatever the local papers are there is also the Leboncoin just buying a plot of land will either be expensive if it already has a CU or potentially fruitless if the land is just farm land.

Montpellier does seem to be thriving, but look at the areas very carefully, there are some very "rough" areas, that seem to have become immigant dumping grounds.

Having said that, it is a bustling, cosmopolitan area, with some really nice areas, it does have something for everyone, like everywhere, do your homework throughly.

Good Luck

Hello, thanks for replying. Do you live in montpellier and can you recommend the decent areas? There is good and bad in every city that is common. In the UK you can look at what houses have sold for in the past do they have that here. We dont want to pay too much for something. We may buy a couple of investment flats as rentals. We were also thinking of sete as that seems lovely and not far from montpellier. Also the closer to the sea the better the winter. In capestang even now the winds are incredible. God knows what its like in the winter. any help would be appreciated.

HERE's a starter for an idea of current prices. But after all, anything (even property) is generally worth what someone is prepared to pay. Fix your budget and get whatever suits you best, and don't forget to hassle about the price. Most people do with property (or should) these days.

If anything like this past winter, it will be much colder than you recently experienced - you can bet your wooly underwear.

Port Marianne is a good area to look at, Lattes is also an area worth checking out, and Juvignac bit further out.

La Grande Motte is great in the summer, but very high proportion of flats and studios, holiday lets in a lot of cases, but a bit dead come winter time.

Mosson at the end of the tram line is the area that seems to have become a bit of a problem area in my view.

Antigone and Richter can be a bit noisy at night but worth a look if you want to be closer in.

I am still exploring the whole area, looking at the possibility of a guest house.

I have not seen very much advertised privately, but will be spending the next couple of months there doing more research!

It really does depend on what type of property/land you require, the good thing is that it is a varied area with a thriving young population, and a great outdoor lifestyle.

I lived in Montpellier for about 6 months in the old part of the town. I was paying about 400 euros for a room a month. Pretty steep. I am not based in Spain where it is a lot cheaper.

This site shows prices of rooms now:
http://rentrooms.tocacity.com/rentro...on/montpellier

Not sure about actual prices of whole apartments as I am just a student.
