Re: Introduction Thread (Somewhere to say Hi)
Thank you for your message. Even though I thought you did not understand: My teenage daughter will NOT be alone. She will be with me and my husband and then at the airport with the airline people at the counter and throughout the flight. RyanAir just needed to link the two bookings.
But I understand your concern and you, as a moderator (specially SUPER moderator) should do what you feel is right for your forum.
Best regards,
Ulyana

Its acrazy world these days and not everybody who signs up on social network sites is legit or honest.
Better safe than sorry.
I'm iintroducing myself atm. We've lived in France for a few years and we like it so far.
Good to see so much action on the BE site, a lot of interesting friendly people and topics.

Hello everyone, I am also new to the Forum - looking to spend about 3 weeks in south west Dordogne next year (May or early june possibly) with a view to moving there from northern England. We would love to hear from anyone who has made the move and would be willing to help and advise us.
thanks in advance.

Members living in the area will come along and give local advice, but the rest of us can also advise on all the nitty-gritty of living in France. Give us more info on yourselves (who are "we"? your employment status? do you speak French?). Healthcare in France depends on whether you're salaried/self-employed, retired or "inactive"... and we need to know which category you'll be in, in order best to advise. Will you be buying? You must consult a Notaire if your family situation is "complicated" (recomposed family or unmarried "partners"), since Inheritance Laws are completely different from the UK.
Take a look in the Read-Me: Moving to France FAQs below, where most subjects are covered, and then ask away in a post of your own in the main section below! Click on "NEW THREAD" and mention South-West Dordogne in the title to attract locals' attention.

I am 57 and took voluntary early retirement in April. My wife is a bit younger and works p/t. Neither of us are fluent in French ( though I can manage a little). I guess we'd be "inactive". The idea is to have 3 weeks to tour the area to get a feel for it and also check out some properties.
We'd then look for a long term rental (1 year) to test out the reality of living in France before committing to buy.
As regards income I have 2 occupational pensions, and we have two rental properties in the UK.

As suggested, post a New Thread in the main section below, giving all your details - not everyone looks in this Introductory Thread and locals who could help might not have seen it, since it'll get swallowed up by the next introduction.

Re: Introduction Thread (Somewhere to say Hi)
Hi there, I'm Ted. I moved to Nîmes about a year ago and I'm just getting the courage to be more sociable. I'm from the UK, in my early 50's and trying to get to know the local area. My French is "beginners to intermediate" but also, having two children and all the admin that goes with it has help me slowly improve my French so hopefully by now it's intermediate. So, this is a quick shout out, HELLO! to any friendly people in the Nîmes area who wish to meet for a tea or coffee. I've given up trying to find a job in the conventional sense and I'm trying any alternatives. I have a good all-round professional IT background and I'm now going to give some, "Estate Agent" work a try! I’d like to try and fit in some voluntary work where possible, or even some simple “skills exchange”. So, any tips or advice or sign posts or just a thumbs up would be helpful. I’m looking forward to some future hours of reading this forum:-)
All the best.

Bonjour Ted, nice to meet you "virtually" although I'm not in your area.
Here's a thumbs up for you and bon courage with the estate agent work - as Bananarama once said, "it ain't what you do it's the way that you do it, that's what gets results"

I don't think there are many BE members in Nïmes or the Gard in general, unless they're all too coy to say!
Depending on how much free time you have with your two children (and their ages), you could join a couple of clubs or associations and meet and make friends with people with the same interests (walking, choir, gym, arts and crafts, etc....) The Mairie will give you a list of all that's going on. If your children are of Primary age, you can make acquaintance with other parents at the school gates and even socialise with your children's friends' parents. You can also get to know other accompanying parents on school outings. But fewer opportunities if they're of Secondary age....
Likewise you could offer your spare time to charities such as Restos du Coeur, Ligue contre le Cancer, etc... Even in my nearest market town these two are active and welcome new volunteers, and there must be many more in Nîmes.
Meanwhile, post again in the main section of the forum below (click on "New Thread"), as this is simply an introductory section and your post will get swallowed up by the following introductions.
Good luck!
