Just to let you know if you haven't already heard, it seems that speed camera/radar warnings on GPSs like Coyote, TomTom, Garmin, etc have now been made illegal in France.

yes I heard this on the radio the other day and it carries a hefty 1000 euro and 6 point fine for having one

They are going to take down all the speed camera warning signs as well, Which in turn means new cameras won't carry the early warning as the signs were normally installed first.

So income is more important than safety.

It seems a bizarre way to keep drivers safe on the road or being a cynic is it just a way to raise more funds? After a trip back to blighty a while ago we came back to 2 tickets - one going, one coming back, both were for doing 5kms over the limit! We are convinced we were on cruise control so think that using mph isn't accurate enough. Would love to contest them but I know there is no point.

So does it mean that you can't use a sat nav at all then?

Yea you can, to find where you're going
But France will be now like Switzerland and you can't have any alerts for radars.

Once TomTom stop updating, for those tech savvy amongst you, you can go here download a POI file to put on your GPS and have the radars as points of interest.

As far as I can gather, it is not illegal to buy a radar warning device, or to be in possession of one, but from now on it is illegal to use it.... The manufacturers have agreed to warn motorists of "dangerous stretches of road" which include those with speed cameras but also those that are also dangerous for other reasons. Instead of warning you of the actual spot a speed camera is situated at, the device will now warn you that, say, a stretch of 4 kilometres is "dangerous".
Around the Lyon area, (possibly elsewhere too) some public-spirited (?) blokes have been going around painting warning signs on the road surface at the exact spot where the speed cameras are, no doubt at some risk to life and limb, as some of the warnings are on motorways, and painted on the surface of the fast lane.
