However, the freesat boxes are very limited in what you can pick up regarding FTA channels.

Invest in a decent ( modern) satellite receiver from a local satellite dealer and have them set it up. They know all the tricks for getting maximum channels and can preprogramme it for you. Here is a good example.

If they programme it well you can pick up hundreds of free streams via Internet as well as many channels via satellite.
Thanks calman but I'm only looking for the standard Freeview channels (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, 5 etc. which I already have with my present satellite tuner) but I need the cach-up channels iPlayer, ITV Hub etc.
It's looking like I do need that UK VPR router.

A tablet with a VPN app should also work for catch up services.

if your device is compatible with your SMART tv then screen mirroring works on most apps.

How about if I simply use an HDMI cable from my laptop into my TV?

I have just tried Tunnelbear VPN and iPlayer still detects that I am outside of the UK.
Does anyone know of a VPN app (for Windows 10) that... works?

That's how I do it.

Have you tried setting your VPN on Switzerland and going on Zattoo, which is only for people in Switzerland, to watch BBC ?
Maybe you need set up a profile on there (can't remember) but watching it is free.
I don't know Tunnelbear VPN.

That's sort-of how I do it, except that it's a Win 10 mini desktop ---HDMI---> AVR (just to get full surround sound) ---HDMI---> (quite old) Sony TV

NordVPN used to work fine for me, haven't tried it for a while though.

*** Edit: I just tested flipping NordVPN over to the UK and tried iPlayer, the VPN was detected ...

I just connected to iplayer with Nordvpn without a problem.
I think that it depends which server in the UK you connect through.
Some servers are frequently used and get recognised - others less so.

I've been through this before, and it's one reason - actually the main reason - that I gave up on iPlayer.

Today I've tried London, Manchester, Glasgow and a couple of UK #nnnn servers, and have gotten bounced by iPlayer every time.

These days I mostly use Transponder for UK channels which although doesn't give me iPlayer, does have the ability for recording.

And it doesn't need (in fact support say don't use) a VPN.

I don't know Tunnelbear VPN.
I can already get UK Freeview channels via my satellite tuner. What I'm looking for is a tuner that would permit me to record programs and access iPlayer.
After asking around, I have found out that a Freesat box (for example) recording model would need to be connected to a VPN router. Too pricey.

The solution for iPlayer etc. (as many have said here) is simply a VPN app on my laptop. The best are recommended here:

It’s clearly not an exact science and a little random if your vpn gets spotted! We have no issue with tunnel bear and also use a family members Sky Go sign in which covers most of our UK tv needs.
