Default Freedom Of Movement within EU

I am a British citizen (UK Passport) living in France and have the Carte de Sejour Permanent / Article 50.
For fellow holders of both of the above, what are our rights about visiting other countries within the European Union?
Are we still allowed to cross frontiers without any additional paperwork / visas etc and would we be time-limited on our stay?
Also, what would the situation be re visiting Switzerland (not an EU member)?
Many Thanks
Robert
